El Sr. Raul Castro está a horas de romper su promesa de liberar a todos los presos políticos de Cuba antes de la medianoche de hoy, 7 de noviembre. Por lo menos 13 de los 75 detenidos en el 2003 permancen encarcelados mientras escribo. Se conoce que varios de estos insistieron en permanecer en Cuba una vez liberados y rehusaron ser desterrados al exilio.

¿Por qué Deben de Votar los Hispanos?

Constituyendo ya el 15.4% de la población estadounidense los Hispanos están en posición, como ninguna minoría antes en la historia, de influenciar como es gobernado este gran país. Ya son sobre el diez por ciento (el 10%) de los votantes elegibles en nueve estados y una porción aún más substancial en estados más grandes tales como Tejas, California, Florida y Nueva York. ¿Pero votarán mañana y lo harán en una forma consistente con sus valores tradicionales?

Según un informe muy reciente del Pew Insitute, solamente un tercio (el 32%) de votantes Hispanos elegibles parecen tener intención de votar. ¿De ser verdad, por qué es el caso? Hispanos registrados para votar seguramente aprecian el poder de sus números como votantes (véase la tabla abajo). Seguramente aprecian el precio que ha sido pagado por Norte Americanos para proteger el privilegio de un voto democrático en este país y lo qué le sucede a un pueblo cuando lo pierde (e.g. los cubanos). Además, tienen una razón moral extraordinariamente importante para votar: ayuda a terminar la tragedia del aborto en los Estados Unidos.

Según el antemencionado estudio, dos tercios (el 69%) de Hispanos católicos y casi la mitad (el 45%) de los Hispanos protestantes piensan votar por Demócratas, y por lo tanto en contra de candidatos pro-Vida. ¿Cómo puede ser posible esto? La protección de la familia es un eminente valor Hispano. Estoy seguro que los Hispanos entienden que la vida humana comienza en el momento de su concepción y que destruir una vida humana, aunque tragicamente legal, es de hecho un asesinato. Es matar a un ser inocente, y más aún, es matar a un hijo o una hija. Seguramente los Hispanos conocen que por lo tanto 1.2 millones de norte americanos fueron asesinados en los Estados Unidos en el 2009 con un aborto. Me es imposible creer que la gran mayoría de Hispanos apoye este asesinato legal.

Quizás haría una diferencia si los Hispanos supieran que el aborto ha afectado a sus familias más que otras. Según el Centro de control de enfermedades de los Estados Unidos se dan 13 abortos por cada 1000 mujeres blancas no-Hispanas pero 27 por cada mil mujeres Hispanas. ¿Por qué es que se están abortando proporcionalmente más embriones humanos Hispanos? (El caso de las mujeres negras es aún más trágico ya que entre ellas se dan 49 abortos por cada mil mujeres.)

¿Cuántos Hispanos conocen que en Miami, por ejemplo, más de 1 de cada 3 mujeres embarazadas (sobre el 35%) abortó a su hijo entre el año 2000 y el 2007? Comparen esto con 1 de 4 mujerews embarazadas (25%) para toda la Florida. Por qué es que hay relativamente más abortos en Miami que en el resto de la Florida y substancialmente más que en el resto de la nación? ¿Será la tasa de abortos en Miami característica de lo que ocurre en otras regiones de alta concentración de Hispanos?

Si la tasa de abortos de Hispanos fuese proporcional a la población Hispana en los Estados Unidos entonces se habrían abortado unos 180 mil embriones Hispanos en el 2008(15% de 1.2 millones).

Pero según el Guttmacher Institute 22% de los abortos en Estados Unidos se le atribuyen a Hispanos. Esto significa que 264 mil embriones Hispanos fueron abortados en el 2008. A los Africanos Americanos se les atribuyeron el 37% o 444 mil abortos ese año. Por lo tanto, casi 2 de cada 3 embriones abortados en el 2008 fueron Africanos Americanos o Hispanos. Sin embargo, entre ambos solo constituyen el 30% de la población de Estados Unidos.

¿Será posible que los Hispanos, conocidos como son por ser protectores y apegados a sus familias sean culpables de esta barbaridad?

¿Habrán sido engañados? ¿Será el resultado de la propaganda de organizaciones bien financiadas como "Planned Parenthood" o de la indiferencia moral al aborto de Univision TV?

No pretendo negar que hayan otros problemas serios causados por el egoísmo y hasta por el odio hacia imigrantes Hispanos. Pero los Hispanos deben de poner a un lado toda otra consideración y someter su voto para protejer a los mas vulnerables, el voto que agradará antes que nada a la conciencia educada y por tanto a Dios. Los asesinatos de Hispanos por aborto son incomparablemente más que los que podrían haber sido asesinados por imigración ilegal.

¿Qué esperan los Hispanos católicos y protestantes para votar por un candidato Pro-Vida mañana? ¿Qué podría ser más importante que esto?

Encuentro con Cómplices de Tiranía Cubana en Perú

Hace 15-30 minutos aquí en Lima, me crucé inesperadamente con una caravana de unos 200 manifestantes que marchaban a favor de la tiranía de Castro, pidiendo la libertad nada menos que para sus cómplices presos en los EE.UU. Pensé, esto no se puede dejar pasar e immediatamente comenzé a gritarles: 'Viva Zapata´, 'Viva Cuba libre', 'Abajo la Tiranía Asesina de Castro', 'Cómplices Asesinos', 'Viva Zapata'!

De repente 1, entonces 2, y luego 3 de los cómplices de tiranía vinieron a intentar de amedrentarme, moviendo las manos de un lado a otro, pero nada, se peleaban con el aire, mientras continuaba gritándoles. La policía intervino pero realmente no fue necesario protejerme, pues ninguno me tocó. Solo tocaban aire. No es como en Cuba o como lo que hemos visto la semana pasada con las Damas en Blanco. Aquí las calles aún son libres y se permite la libertad de expresión. Perú pasó la prueba de fuego. Viva Perú libre!

ACTUALIZACIÓN - 10 PM

Lo interesante y cómico, si no fuese tan trágico, es que uno de los tres me advirtió: ¨Yo soy cubano¨. Me pregunto si pensaría que eso significaba que poseía algún derecho sobre mi, o que por ser cubano, lo que yo vociferaba lo consideraba un insulto para Cuba, donde solo puede existir una opinión, la cual casualmente, supongo que según él, no era la mía sino la del y la de su amo. ¿Como me atrevía a contradecirlos? ¿Quien me habría figurado?

En la emoción del momento, al pobre cubano Castrista posiblemente se le olvidó que no estaba en Cuba, sino en Perú, y que aquí no había ni policía política Castrista, ni autobuses a donde arrastrarme. Ni las calles eran de Fidel, como no lo son en Cuba.

Le aclaré que también era cubano, y continué vociferando mis protestas en voz alta. La policía se paró entre ellos y yo.

Entonces siguieron su camino, y yo continué vociferando mis protestas, sin seguirlos.

Pienso que la experiencia de ser contradecido por alguien que se oponía a su amo, y no poder hacer nada, era posiblemente algo radicalmente nuevo para ese cubano.

ORLANDO ZAPATA TAMAYO

Para los que no sepan aún, Orlando Zapata Tamayo fue un preso político cubano que murió el 23 de febrero del 2010 luego de supuestamente haber sido trasladado de la cárcel a un hospital, tras una huelga de hambre de más de 80 días. Su madre ha acusado al régimen Castrista de haberle quitado el agua al preso, y por tanto de asesinarlo. Ella no tuvo la suerte que tuve yo. Cuando protestó junto a las Damas en Blanco la arrastraron a un autobús como a las otras, y 2 días más tarde, en otra protesta, se alega que una mujer de la policía política le expresó ( audio) que se alegraba que hubiese muerto su hijo.

La Sra. Reina Zapata (a la extrema derecha), madre de Orlando Zapata Tamayo,

fue arrastrada por protestar junto a las Damas en Blanco, la semana pasada en la Habana.

¿Recomienda Obispo Español Convivencia con Tiranía?

Hoy se reportó que un obispo Español, el Reverendo Monseñor Domingo Oropesa, de Cienfuegos, Cuba, recomendó diálogo entre la disidencia Cubana y la tiranía con el fin de que "las cosas..." sean "...más serenas y pacíficas" y además para impulsar "esa capacidad de convivir juntos, aunque las opiniones y pareceres sean diversos".

¿Acaso también cree que los casi 2 millones exiliados cubanos deberían de regresar y someterse a la tiranía luego de un diálogo?

La recomendación del reverendo Monseñor con la tiranía Castrista se distingue de la que tiene con pederastas para los cuales aboga "perdón de los pecadores", pero "intransigencia con el pecado".

Creo que no sería injusto preguntarle por qué cree que sería buena idea convivir con una tiranía acusada de un catálogo extenso de asesinatos y crueldades. ¿Acaso cree que debería de seguir 'gobernando' en Cuba, que esto sería más justo a que fuese juzgada por un tribunal legitimo, o que la justicia no es esencial en el caso de Cuba?

No puede ser. Tiene que haber un error en el reportaje.

¿Opositor Político, Posible Suicida o Criminal Común?

¿Es que el régimen Castrista está tratando al disidente y huelguista de hambre cubano, Guillermo Fariñas, como víctima potencial de suicidio o como opositor político? Hospitalizado el 3 de marzo después de caer inconsciente, el Sr. Fariñas fue nuevamente enviado a su hogar sin colocársele bajo observaciòn por ser un potencial suicida.

El Sr. Fariñas está listo para morir, o por lo menos eso es lo que nos asegura:

"Seguiré hasta las últimas consecuencias... ¿Usted quiere morirse?...(Silencio)... Sí, me quiero morir. Ya es hora de que el mundo se percate de que este Gobierno es cruel..."

Su anterior ayuno duró unos 6 meses. Sin embargo, en el pasado el régimen lo ha hospitalizado, y por lo tanto ha podido sobrevivir (contrario a Orlando Zapata Tamayo, preso político que recién murió de huelga de hambre, al parecer, en un hospital del régimen).

Pero parece que en esta ocasión no será así con Fariñas. Por lo menos eso es lo que este veterano de la guerra de Angola nos ha informado por medio de su carta del 5 de marzo a Raul Castro:

"Tres compañeros de armas míos, muy cercanos a usted, me han enviado sendos mensajes para ponerme al tanto que usted dio las órdenes pertinentes para que se me dejara morir..." (Extracto de carta de Fariñas a Raúl Castro, del 5 de marzo, 2010).

Llámelo lo que lo llame, Fariñas evidentemente está intentando suicidarse para atraer atención a la situación de presos políticos cuyas vidas también peligran en las cárceles Castristas. De lo contrario, bebería agua y comería. Es un grave error moral intentar suicidarse, incluso por un noble propósito como este, y Fariñas debería de desistir tal y como como otros, tanto aliados como enemigos políticos, e incluso la madre de Tamayo (y este escritor) le han pedido. Sin embargo, dado que ha continuado insistiendo en suicidarse, debió de haber sido inmediatamente puesto bajo supervisión médica para prevenir su muerte, y bajo observación adecuada para suicidas. Esto no ha sucedido. ¿Por qué? ¿Qué significará? ¿Pensarán dejarlo morir?

¿Significará que así es cómo el régimen Castrista ha decidido tratar a víctimas probables del suicidio en Cuba, o solamente a aquellas que sean opositores políticos? ¿Significará que no saben como responder racionalmente a sus críticas, y que por tanto lo quieren muerto? ¿O significará que lo tratarán como a los ‘criminales comúnes’, es decir, para insensibilizar el público, y justificar negligencia criminal, intentarán caracterizarlo tal y como el monopolio mediático del régimen ha intentado con Orlando Zapata Tamayo?

Si nada de lo antemencionado es el caso, entonces por qué no hospitalizan inmediatamente al Sr. Fariñas para así prevenir su suicidio? ¿Para dejarlo torturarse un poco más? Piensan dejarlo colapsar una y otra vez, rehidratándolo cada vez, hasta que por fin muera? O simplemente piensan dejarlo morir? ¿Que es lo que esperan?

Lo hidrataron el miércoles cuando lo hospitalizaron, pero excepto por eso no ha comido por 10 días (¡ni ha sido hidratado por 3!). ¿Por qué permiten que se auto torture? ¿Porque así tratan a los enfermos mentales, o porque es un opositor político? Lo humano y lo que procede es inmediatamente hospitalizarlo y colocarlo bajo supervisión para suicidas (preferiblemente con observadores independientes, aprobados por su familia más cercana), o liberar a los presos por los cuales se ha puesto en huelga de hanbre y sed. De lo contrario, es casi seguro que Guillermo Fariñas, luego de auto torturarse, logre suicidarse, y muy pronto.

Fariñas Debe Desistir de Huelga de Hambre

Según he leído, luego de más de 4 días sin comida y agua, la muerte del disidente cubano Guillermo Fariñas se aproxima rápidamente, y podría ocurrir en pocos días, o hasta horas. He estado reflexionando y escribiendo sobre una entrevista que Guillermo recién concedió, pero temo no terminar a tiempo para que lea lo que escribo

Sin embargo, no se necesitan razones para pedir a alguien que no se suicide, excepto respetar su vida, su derecho a vivir, y desear que viva, y por eso se lo pido.

No creo ser el único cubano, o ser humano, que piensa así, y ojalá, pronto, otros también se lo pidan.

¿Tendrán los Castros amigos en Google? Resulta que este 'post' buscando convencer a Guillermo que desista se encuentra en Internet, si uno sabe donde buscar, pero no en las búsquedas de blogs de Google. ¿Por qué?

Espero que sin embargo, Fariñas haya leído mi petición, y que sepa que aunque respeto, admiro y me solidarizo con su deseo de liberar a los otros presos, y a que esté dispuesto a dar su vida por ellos ("no hay mayor amor"), me opongo a que la de mediante el suicidio, pues eso violaría la ley divina. Sería tirarle el don de la vida Dios en la cara, como cuando se matan a los inocentes.

También me opongo a que (según entrevista con miscelaneasdecuba.net) ponga a la patria por encima de todo, si con eso quiere decir, hasta por encima de Dios.

Para protestar los graves abusos de un ídolo, es decir, de Castro, no debería de tentar a Dios.

Ya se puede encontrar este escrito en la búsqueda de blogs en Google, aunque 24 horas después de publicarlo. Lo que no encuentro son muchas peticiones a Fariñas para que desista. Querrán que se mate? De que lado estarán entonces, de la vida o de la muerte? Piénsenlo.

Se reporta que la madre de Orlando Zapata Tamayo y otros le han pedido que desista pero Guillermo rehusa. La herida de la injusticia, y a su, y nuestra dignidad, es profunda.

Debe de preguntarse que entonces es lo que realmente hay que considerar: ¿el suicidio o la guerra justa contra la tiranía?

La guerra para ser justa requiere 3 condiciones según Santo Tomás de Aquina:

1. Tener la razón.

2. Poder ganarla.

3. Que la victoria no resulte en algo peor o igual a lo actual. No puede ser por venganza, sino solo para crear algo mejor, y sin causar algo peor.

La primera condición la cumplimos luego de más de 50 años de tiranía, y un tirano de corazón endurecido, que no reconoce el sufrimiento que ha causado; no se arrepiente. Su polìtica es la del encubrimiento; trata de ocultar todo con su 'filantropìa internacional' y otras obras publicitarias, el monopolio de los medios, el exilio, la represión y violación de los derechos fundamentales, y cìnicos juicios y condenas por 'peligrosidad social' de opositores que lo puedan desenmascarar, denunciar y llevar a juicio.

Hasta con la música del pueblo ha pretendido encubrir y dulcificar sus graves crímenes. Hace unos meses convocó un concierto por la paz. Hoy nos entrega el cadaver de Orlando Zapata Tamayo, el cual su periódico describe como 'un criminal común'.

La 2 siguientes condiciones son otra cosa. Requieren discusión y serio compromiso y planificación.

Piénsenlo.

Petición del 2008 a Lula por los Presos Políticos Cubanos

Según Brazzil.com el presidente de Brazil Lula da Silva niega haber recibido carta alguna abogando por los presos políticos en Cuba. Sin embargo, el 13 de agosto de 2008, le escribí una misiva pidiéndole ayuda para el ahora muerto huelguista de hambre, Orlando Zapata Tamayo y los otros presos políticos, y le envié copia a la embajadora de Brasil en la O.N.U.

Sin embargo, Brazzil.com ha divulgado lo siguiente:

Lula ha negado recibir la correspondencia. Quejándose dijo:" La gente necesita parar ese hábito de escribir cartas, guardándolas para luego alegar que las enviaron a otros.” Y con un toque de refinamiento en su propio cinismo, concluyó: " Si esta gente me hubiera hablado antes, le hubiese pedido que parase la huelga y quizás esto hubiera prevenido su muerte."

Tengo en mi posesión la carta que le envié a Lula, al cuidado del Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, tanto por correo electrónico (con todos los datos de comunicación de la cabecera) como por correo certificado, y también la repuesta del gobierno de Brasil (véase imagen de la carta de repuesta más abajo).

También envié cartas a la Presidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner de Argentina, a la reina de Canadá, y a los presidentes y embajadores de la O.N.U. de Chile, México, Uruguay, Francia, Alemania (único país entre estos que nos ha apoyado) y de los Países Bajos.

A continuación pueden leer un extracto de lo que escribí al presidente Lula. Quizá ahora él, y los otros mandatarios a quienes les escribí, harán algo verdaderamente efectivo y digno de nuestro respecto, antes de otra muerte por huelga de hambre.

”Como cubano exiliado apelo publicamente por su comprensiòn y muy respetuosamente solicito que clarifique como es que Usted entiende la Declaración sobre los Derechos Humanos (“DDH”) a la cual Brasil suscribe. Espero también poder contar con su apoyo.

”Dado que Brasil es también miembra del Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU (“CDH”) como lo es el régimen cubano, existe una oportunidad única para que Usted aborde en este nuevo contexto las violaciones de derechos humanos perpetradas por ellos contra el pueblo cubano por casi 50 años.

”Como es de conocimiento público e internacional, desde que el régimen se apoderó de Cuba en 1959, prometiendo liberarnos, ha continuamente violado derechos humanos fundamentales del pueblo Cubano como:

nuestro derecho a salir y entrar a nuestra patria.
nuestro derecho a viajar libremente dentro de nuestra patria.
nuestro derecho a pública y pacificamente expresarnos, comunicarnos y asociarnos con otros, o con la sociedad cubana en general con fines políticos que se opongan a los del régimen.
nuestro derecho a elegir un gobierno según fue legitimamente acordado en nuestra consitutción de 1940 o según pudiera ser determinado por una legítima constitución convencional en la cual todos los cubanos, incluyendo los exiliados, puedan participar sin arriesgar censura, golpizas o encarcelamiento.

“Como también se conoce internacionalmente, en el 2003 75 cubanos fueron encarcelados por protestar las violaciones del régimen a los derechos humanos. Ellos y otros han sido acusados de colaborar con los EEUU por aceptar su apoyo al buscar ejercer derechos reconocidos por la DDH. Casi al mismo tiempo 3 otros fueron ejecutados luego de de juicios sumarios privados, o quizás sin juicios, por secuestrar una lancha e intentar salir del país, a pesar de que nadie fue herido fisicamente.

”Cuatro de estos prisioneros políticos iniciaron una huelga de hambre en julio. En otras palabras, eligieron renunciar su derecho fundamental a la comida si comer significaba que tendrían que renunciar otros derechos fundamenetales violados por el régimen. La disidente Marta Beatriz Roque, luego de más de un mes bajo estado de sitio en la Habana, Cuba, ha comenzado una huelga de hambre, y está en peligro iminente de muerte pues es diabética. Se reporta que ya está sufriendo escalofríos y que la parte superior de su cuerpo está contorcionada. Pueden leer mas aquí.

Beatriz es católica y el 11 de noviembre recibió la unción de los enfermos, sacramento que se le ofrece a fieles cerca de la muerte. Debe de parar de llevar a cabo una huelga de hambre que acelere su muerte, pues continuar es equivalente a suicidio y por lo tanto en contra de las enseñanzas de la Iglesia Católica y la Ley Divina.

Parar la huelga no es cobardía sino respeto a Dios quien merece toda nuestra honra, por encima de todo, incluso de la patria. No le tiremos el don de la vida en la cara.

¡Sorpresa! Los Castro Rehusan Responder a Acusaciones de Yoani Sanchez

CNN reportó que el régimen de los Castro rehusó comentar sobre las acusaciónes de Yoani Sanchez, la cual alega haber sido detenida y golpeada por la policía de la tiranía. ¿Quien nos va a obligar a responder (seguramente se preguntan los Castros tras carcajadas)?

Desde hace 50 años en Cuba no hay un poder judicial independiente. No hay separación de poderes. Solo esta tiranía. Todo lo controlan estos criminales. ¿Quien entonces podría sorprenderse que no admitan cuestionamientos? ¿CNN? ¿Yoani?

¿Donde es que han estado CNN y todos los otros todos estos años? Dado el interés de los medios de noticias más conocidos cualquiera se podría preguntar si es la primera vez que los Castro mandan a golpear a una mujer o a un disidente, o si este alegado ataque (por terrible que es) es lo más grave que se ha reportado de estos asesisnos.

También quizás por eso es que no responden. Porque hasta les conviene ya que distrae de sus crímenes más monstruosos. Además, sin investigaciones y sistema judicial independiente, es la palabra (o silencio) de ellos contra la de las víctimas.

O peor. No responden porque admiten que lo hicieron y están orgullosos de sus crímenes los cuales ellos llaman virtud. Sí, y estos son los que aconsejan al Comité de Derechos Humanos de La ONU.

Sin embargo, confío en Yoani? Esto es lo que se reporta que declaró en una entrevista 2 días después del alegado ataque:

"This is what we are seeing in Cuba now: the absence of any sort of argument, handling people through violence and fear. This is all we have left. There is no symbolical legacy, none the things that existed in the first years of the [revolutionary] process. Terror is the only thing that remains."

Traducción (mía):

"Esto es lo que estamos viendo en Cuba ahora: la ausencia de ningún tipo de argumento, manejando a la gente por medio de la violencia y el miedo.Esto es todo lo que nos queda. No queda una herencia simbólica, ninguna de las cosas que existieron en los primeros años del proceso (revolucionario). Terror es lo único que queda."

O sea, para Yoani, Fidel Castro estuvo bien esos primeros años. ¿Si solo se pudiera volver a esos días? ¿Es eso lo que piensa Yoani? Si no lo es, ¿por qué lo declara?

Dos de los principales diarios argentinos reportaron ayer y hoy ataques a sus sistemas de distribución. Adicionalmente el portal de bitácoras cubanas "Voces Cubanas", el cual incluye la de Yoani Sanchez, no es accesible desde por lo menos 2 servidores y localizaciones independientes en Argentina. Sin embargo, el blog de Yoani Sanchez continua siendo accesible aquí.

Coincidentalmente el ataque a los periódicos comenzó casi simultaneamente con el reportaje de Yoani Sanchez alegando haber sido detenida y golpeada por la `policía política' en la Habana.

¿Que habrá estado bien o mal según este autor periodista de Juventud Rebelde hasta 1989?

O sea, por 30 años estuvo de acuerdo con Castro, años en los cuales cerca de 2 millones de exiliados fueron en efecto forzados al exilio, miles fusilados y decenas de miles perdieron sus vidas escapando.

¿Está Usted arrepentido de su colaboración con la supuesta 'revolución'? ¿O es Usted de los que cree que por los primeros años estuvo bien? ¿Y su esposa Yoani Sánchez? ¿Por que es que luchan Ustedes? ¿Por un Castrismo o socialismo con algunas reformas? ¿Podrían Usted y ella clarificar sus posiciones aunque no fuera por otra razón que en honor al diálogo entre cubanos?

No me interesó ver el concierto de Juanes por Internet. Seré franco, no es que no me interesó, es que me indignó que se uniera a Castro para jugar con nuestra tragedia. Por eso ni lo busqué. Vi par de fotos de la multitud lo cual bastó para hacerme hervir la sangre.

Por eso también es que me desconcertó la llamada de mis padres, ambos octogenarios y exiliados desde octubre de 1960. Ambos estaban sumamente complacidos con el concierto (del cual se dispararon la mitad o más) mientras yo les aseguraba que estaban siendo manipulados sentimentalmente por un buen cantante. Mi madre insistió que no, que el concierto no podría haber sido del agrado de Fidel Castro. Le aseguré que sí lo era como todo lo que le de un aura de normalidad a la criminalidad y al atropello de los derechos de nuestro pueblo por medio siglo.

Entíendase por favor lo inusual que es esta conversación que les relato. Normalmente mis padres serían los más indispuestos a hacer alguna conceción a cualquier iniciativa que pudiese proceder de los Castro, y en efecto, así lo fue hasta antes del concierto. Sin embargo ahora mi padre argumentaba que ese millón de personas no eran Castristas sino jóvenes buscando alguna alegría, algún paliativo para el desespero. ¿Como? Por su parte mi madre me preguntó que si había oído de un tal Carlos Varela. Sí, un vendido le aseguré, cuando hace años lo vi en Berkeley no se atrevió a cantar "Guillermo Tell". Se vistió de negro me explicó, y según pude entender, se puso un letrero diciendo que en su casa tenía una camisa blanca.

Continuó asegurándome como Juanes reclamó la libertad varias veces. Le aseguré que se debería de referir a la de los '5 héroes' de Castro, pero no, ella no lo vio así, Ella vio otra cosa. Mi padre también.

Es dificil salir a la calle en Argentina sin que reconozcan mi acento extranjero. Muchos saben que nací en Cuba y donde quiera que voy alguien frecuentemente quiere saber algo. Sí, algo. Algo que confirme o que niege la propaganda constante. Hoy no fue una excepción.

En el supermercado (una bodega grande) el que tendía a las verduras immediatamente me anunció que vio el concierto de Juanes y que le gustó. Claro, el ya sabía que soy anti castrista y por lo tanto buscaba mi reacción.

Le respondí que por un lado se jactan de haberle presentado a Cuba y al mundo un concierto 'consagrado' a la paz pero por otro no dejaron cantar al exilado cubano Willy Chirino, ni invitaron a muchos otros también del exilio. Paz y pero. Paz pero a Cuba solo entran y salen solo los cubanos que este quiera. Paz mientras se imponen con amenazas, armas y violencia sobre todos. Paz pero lo de uno es de ellos y lo de ellos del máximo jefe. Paz y más de 3 millones de exiliados desde 1959. Paz y la conciencia no dormida explota.

Entre los objetivos de la tiranía está el de descarrilar y neutralizar a la disidencia, apaciguar las cada vez más intranquilas masas, ocultar el genocidio cultural del exilio cubano (y por tanto del pueblo), en esta ocasión con Juanes, pues saben bien que es un gran cantante y performer. Además está el de consolidar las nuevas clases sociales pero sin más guerra de clases, todas bajo Fidel, Raul, su familia y su partido.

Fidel Castro es el rey de las apariencias y ahora desea aparentar no solo que es revolucionario (y no traidor) sino que el estado criminal que ha creado es algo bueno y normal, producto de su amor.

Le aseguré que solo buscaban confundir los buenos sentimientos que provoca la música de Juanes con las ideas de ellos como si estuviesen relacionadas.

Así lo describe Granma hoy: "Concierto Paz sin Fronteras. Un regalo maravilloso de amor, solidaridad y música… pasión de todos los cubanos."

"Lavado de cerebro" me respondió este argentino de unos 20 años.

Veamos, Yoani quiere que los Castro y el Partido Comunista continuen administrando las riquezas, es decir, continuen controlando a Cuba economicamente y con eso a todos los cubanos que dependen de ellos (entre los cuales no está ella obviamente).

Sin embargo no quiere que dirijan a Cuba. Es decir para ella los que deberían de "dirigir" (o creerse dirigir) a Cuba, por otro lado deberían estar sujetos economicamente a los Castro.

¿Es eso lo que Yoani Sanchez nos quieres decir?

¿Es por eso que Yoani Sanchez quiere que Obama levante el embargo, es decir, para remover todo obstáculo económico a los Castro, es decir, para que estos 'administren las riquezas' sin obstáculos?

¿Es esa la paz que Yoani Sanchez trata de lograr para Cuba?

Cubaencuentro nos informa que 6 presos políticos adicionales han expresado su apoyo por el concierto "por la paz" en el cual Juanes cantará junto a músicos que respaldan a la tiranía que nos oprime desde hace 50 años.

¿Debiéramos tomar en serio cuando estos presos, rehenes del tirano, declaran favorablemente a la tiranía? ¿Ningún gobierno lo haria, y solo un enemigo nos recomendaría que lo hiciéramos.

Primero lleguemos a la paz, para lo cual se requiere justicia, para lo cual se requiere que los Castro y su ilegítimo régimen se arrepientan y entreguen, o se mueran, o se remuevan. Luego habrá tiempo para serenatas y conciertos.

Nosotros las víctimas no comenzamos esta guerra.

Mientras en los últimos meses la dictadura Castrista ha intensificado y multiplicado sus crímenes contra nuestro pueblo, personajes como la Presidenta de Argentina y no pocos en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos buscan hipocritamente la forma de fortalecer su amistad con el tirano sin aparentar ser cómplices. No les es posible sin contradecirse y caer en desgracia moral.

Sin embargo, en un tema tan complejo como el nuestro, responder a la propaganda internacional impulsada por la tiranía, comenzando con las naciones unidas, no es tan fácil como gritar 'viva Cuba libre' o 'abajo Fidel'. Dicho remedio no es suficiente para disipar la diversidad de la malicia que confrontamos. Los cubanos que deseamos justicia y libertad para Cuba tenemos pocos amigos verdaderos, muchos de otros tipos y enemigos reales. Mientras nos esforzamos por una patria donde todos podamos vivir dignamente, con verdadera justicia y libertad, muchos se unen al tirano motivados por ambiciones de lucro y poder, y en casos más patéticos, por placer, diversión y hasta por inclusión social.

Para colmo, si intentamos ayudar a liberar a Cuba desde afuera tenemos que hacerlo desde los países que estos muchos gobiernan, es decir, todos en este hemisferio a mayor o menor grado, y casi todos en el mundo. A esto se le suma la contaminación de la oposición en Cuba y en el exilio con simpatizantes bien recompensados que aún le quedan al régimen.

Los razonamientos que nuestros enemigos usan para justificarse ante el mundo son muchos pero en su mayoría vacíos moralmente. Por ejemplo, en EE.UU., a pesar de haber sido cómplices de la dictadura batistiana sin la cual no hubiésemos sido atrapados por más de 50 años bajo un régimen totalitario, y de supuestamente estar a favor de la democratización y libertad de nuestro pueblo, ahora en el Congreso se preocupan por el supuesto derecho de los estadounidenses de viajar a Cuba y hacer ricos negocios con la tiranía. Ahora hay hasta congresistas que defienden al tirano publicamente describiéndole como un gran lider, etc. Otros como la Secretaria de Estado Hilary Clinton, la cual no solo se unió a la pandilla pro Castrista en la OEA, sino que a pesar de sus supuestas simpatías con el pueblo cubano, aclaró que no se opondría al Congreso estadounidense en su proyecto de reconciliación con la tiranía.

Si, reconciliación ahora tiene un nuevo significado, uno sin referencia al bien y al mal, a las ofensas, al arrepentimiento y al perdón. Ahora basta con convergencia de intereses.

A la entrada del parque central de Nueva York hace poco hasta erigieron una estatua en honor del infame asesino Argentino, El Dr. Ernesto Guevara, la cual quizás por verguenza (o por presión) por fin removieron. Esto es lo que ocurre hoy en Estados Unidos, hogar para más de 1 millón de exiliados, supuestamente nuestros mejores amigos en las 2 hemisferias de las Américas, supuestamente nuestros abogados ante el mundo pero ahora, nuevamente, cómplices de nuestra desgracia, producto de la falta de respeto de muchos estadounidenses, izquierda y derecha, por la identidad latina y cubana del exilio. Esperanzas de que con la elección presidencial de un miembro de una minoría esto cambiara posiblemente fue esperar mucho. Obviamente ser de una raza u otra no garantiza nada moralmente. Solo hay que considerar que el tirano es cubano y que sus principales aliados son latinos, por ejemplo, Argentina.

Esta última cambió de rumbo con el gobierno de la presidenta Kirchner la cual se ha convertido en una de las principales defensoras de tiranía disimulándolo por supuesto con elecciones y hasta con un arreglo con el tirano para que le concediese el exilio de la ex-Castrista, Hilda Molina, la cual tenía solo 16 años cuando el estado totalitorio se nos impuso. Licensiada en leyes, la Presidenta evidentemente razona que puede identificarse y apoyar una tiranía mientras le haga bien a alguna de sus víctimas.¿O es que la presidenta Kirchner quiere creer y hacernos creer que no hay contradicción en darle refugio a cubanos mientras respalda firmemente a la tiranía que pretende el derecho a atraparlos?

¿Razonará que como Castro es anti estadounidense hay que apoyarlo aunque pisotee a los cubanos?¿Que el resentimiento anti-estadounidense supera su amor a lo justo?

¿Será que con Hilda Molina pretende limpiar su conciencia ante sí y todos, o es que meramente busca votos tanto de los que están con Dios como de los que están con el diablo? ¿Serán Hilda y Cuba para la presidenta Kirchner, oportunidades para ganar votos, poder, y nada más?

Responda, Presidenta Kirchner, responda.

Al parecer los organizadores anónimos de Resistencia Cuba han decidido rearropar su mensaje. Según Cuba Inglesa ahora lo de las imágenes es 'a la libre' y luego de esa aclaración ha publicado 6 sugerencias, incluyendo hasta hace poco (ya no) la imagen de la muchacha ligeramente arropada aguantando un rifle, ¿será que como símbolo de la liberación a la cual algunos aspiran y del método para alcanzarla? Por ahora solo diré que a mi me sugiere más que nada el pasado que hay que dejar atrás.

Resistencia Cuba no ha hecho caso a mi solicitud de que eliminasen a Desde donde estoy en el exilio de la lista de participantes. Sin embargo reprogramaron el enlace a este blog para que no funcione. No se si habrá sido por error pero el efecto es que los que no me conocen no puedan leer sobre sobre nuestras diferencias.

¿Para qué querrán seguir anúnciando mi blog como participante si saben que no compartimos valores críticos?. No lectores, no hemos llegado a un entendimiento, algo difícil con personas que no responden. Sin embargo, esto no es sobre mi sino sobre 13 millones de cubanos y por tanto no tengo incoveniente en reclamar, esta vez el mismo día que Resistencia Cuba y otros, la liberación de los presos políticos, como tantas veces lo he hecho antes.

Tampoco tengo incoveniente en reclamar el mismo día que otros y para todo cubano tanto el derecho de acceso a Internet como el de entrar y salir de Cuba libremente. Sin embargo,rehuso dejar la reclamación ahí, pues el respeto y la protección de los derechos humanos incluye mucho más que eso. Por ejemplo, incluye derechos críticos como el de la libre expresión, la libre asociación con fines políticios o religiosos, la libertad de prensa, de los medios de comunicación y el acceso a ellos; el habeas corpus y el fin inmediato de detenciones arbitrarias; el libre acceso a toda información, incluyendo Internet a un costo proporcional a los salarios de los ciudadanos. Incluye además y sobre todo, el respeto al derecho a la vida, especialmente la de aquellos que no se pueden defender: niños, infantes y aquellos aún en un estado embriónico y dependientes absolutamente de otros.

Adicionalmente, ¿como omitir que mientras no haya un sistema legítimo de justicia de poco serviría que acogiesen favorablemente nuestra reclamación de derechos? ¿Ante quien los reclamaríamos si los violasen nuevcamente? ¿Ante el aparato totalitario de Castro y el partido único? Debería de ser obvio (y lamentablemente aún no lo es para algunos) que por eso es necesario reclamar el derecho constitucional (legitimante acordado y establecido en 1940) a un gobierno con separación de poderes ejecutivos, judiciales y legislativos y electo democráticamente en elecciones multipartidistas.

Por lo tanto, no dirigiré mi reclamacipon al 'gobierno' cubano pues como nunca ha sido legítimo, no es nuestro gobierno.

Desde el exilio en Argentina hoy y mañana nuevamente reclamaré lo siguiente para Cuba:

A Usted(es) que se ha(n) apoderado de Cuba
ilegitimamente por 50 años, le(s) reclamo:
Liberación incondicional de mis compatriotas presos políticos.
Respeto a todos los derechos humanos.
Elecciones libres multipartidistas.
Separación de poderes ejecutivos, legislativos y judiciales.
Misma moneda para todos.

Si no acepta(n), y no ha(n) dado razón hasta ahora para esperar algo de Usted(es), por lo menos considere(n) trabajar hacia la propuesta de paz que delineé aquí o proponga(n) una.

El disidente cubano Jorge Luis García Pérez, Antúñez, y varios otros fueron arrestados el 24 de mayo mientras se preparaban para marchar al cementerio Colón para conmemorar la muerte en prisión del opositor Pedro Luis Boitel en 1972.

Según Directorio.org, el periodista disidente Carlos Serpa Maceira reportó que además les arrebataron libros censurados y otras pertenencias.

Los arrestados incluían a Iris Pérez Aguilera (su esposa), Martha Díaz Rondón, Blas Fortún Martínez, Ernesto Mederos Arrozarena, Carlos Cordero Páez y Juan Oriol Verdecia Évora.

Antúnez recientemente terminó un ayuno de líquidos durante el cual estuvo, con varios otros ayunantes, bajo estado de sitio por fuerzas de Seguridad del Estado, por más de 2 meses y en su propia casa. Varios disidentes que intentaron visitarlos durante ese periodo fueron arrestados y golpeados, entre ellos, 3 mujeres.

Pedro Luis Boitel fue un estudiante universitario quien como opositor de Batista se unió al movimiento del 26 de Julio de Fidel Castro. Sin embargo, también se opuso a las pretensiones dictatoriales de Castro y en 1961 fue condenado a 10 años de prisión, donde murió luego de 53 días en huelga de hambre.

¿Estará Confundido el Congresista Serrano Sobre Castro y Cuba?

Aquí podemos ver al Congresista Puertoriqueño-Estadounidense José Serrano [D-NY] en una protesta contra Castro en 1992.

Sin embargo, el 19 de febrero del 2008 el New York Times lo cita contendiendo:

"Es hora de reconocer que Castro ha sido un gran lider para su pueblo - y movernos a comprometernos con su sucesor. Es hora de dejar atrás las luchas del pasado y caminar hacia adelante juntos."

Efectivamente, el 6 de enero del 2009 tomó un paso más al convertirse en el patronicador del Cuba Reconciliation Act (Acta para la Reconciliación con Cuba) el cual está siendo considerado actualmente en la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos.

El congresista posiblemente esté confundido, lo cual podemos entender hasta cierto punto, pues ¿quien no lo ha estado en algún momento respecto a Cuba y Castro? ¿Respecto a lo que es justo o no lo es? Sin embargo su confusión parece haber llegado al extremo. Ojalá nos ayude a entender las razones por la cual cambió su posición a una diametricalmente opuesta. ¿Creerá ahora que una dictadura y todo lo que necesite para mantenerse intacta en el poder es aceptable en algunos casos? ¿Sería aceptable para él una en Haití? ¿En Estados Unidos? ¿En Puerto Rico? ¿O solo en Cuba?

Politicamente quizás el Congresista Serrano pensará que solo le debe una explicación a sus constityentes.

Sin embargo, creo que moralmente le debe una al pueblo cubano y a sus más de 2 millones de exiliados, algunos de los cuales fueron criados en el exilio en Puerto Rico y Nueva York y aún viven ahí.

Castro Again Accused of Drug Trafficking

A former direct report of Pablo Escobar has tied Fidel and Raul Castro to a chain of narco trafficking linking Colombia, Nicaragua, Panama, Mexiso and Cuba. Jon Jairo Velázquez, 'Popeye', who is serving a sentence in a high security prison in Colombia claims in a video interview that Fidel Castro and Pablo Escobar had a very close relationship with Gabriel Garcia Marquez acting as their intermediary. Operational details were allegedly engineered by his brother Raul. The apparatus served to provide leftist guerrillas and narco-traffickers with weapons and the regime with $100 million. According to Velázquez 6000 kilos of 'drugs' remain 'hidden' in Cuba.

This is the second public testimony pointing to the Castros' involvement in narco-trafficking. In the late 1980's General Arnaldo Ochoa and 3 others were executed by the regime for drug trafficking after a high profile trial in which one of the defendants claimed to have been told by another that it was all supervised by the highest authorities in the regime.

The accusations are reported in a short 2 part documentary available in Telemundo51 and produced by Gina Montaner, daughter of Carlos Alberto Montaner, a well known exiled writer and publisher.

Return Guantanamo to Whom?

Julia E. Sweig, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, has recommended that the US government return Guantanamo to 'Cuba' and convert it to a 'public health research and treatment center' where Cuba the US and other nations in the region could 'develop strategies for cooperation' in health care and research. Her views appear in an essay titled "Don't Just Close Gitmo. Give It Back." published by The Washington Post.

Ms. Sweig may in part be justifiably reacting against a radicalized sector in the US who believe in their right to sovereignty while denying it of others. One only needs to read some of the comments readers posted to her essay in the Washington Post to realize that this sector is still a reality.

Yet she is representative of a radicalized sector on the opposite extreme which shamelessly argues for US support of a totalitarian dictatorship. How else could one characterize the fact that she simply omitted millions of Castro's victims and opponents from her Guantanamo solution? Perhaps she hoped to obscure these most difficult facts by reminding us it's a move that dates 'back to the Kennedy White House' and has been "...viewed favorably by Havana ever since...".

By 'Havana'. Hmm.

Why doesn't Ms. Sweig address the fact that Havana has not been legitimately represented by anyone since Batista's and Castro's respective coups in 1952 and 1959? Is it because, as far as she is concerned, the Cuban regime's potential as a US partner in health research and treatment trumps all other considerations, just as it does for many on the US left? What do she and they mean by 'health'?

After all what is the significance of 'health treatments' in a nation whose population has diminished for 3 consecutive years and in 2008 possibly by as much as 6%? One would have expected that she would understand that health should logically manifest as more life, not less, as in a growing healthy forest.

Evidently she compartmentalizes 'health care' and 'respect for human rights' and would like us to think that, like the Nazis, a nation can be highly successful in the former while utterly failing in the latter; that violations of the former have no impact on the latter. Thus in her view it seems as if a health researcher or practitioner is in no way disqualified by abusing his patients' or subjects' human rights. Cleansing the nation of all who disagree with him has not been an issue of conscience for Castro nor does it seem to be for Ms. Sweig. Cultural genocide, ethics and health care are simply unrelated.

Perhaps she believes that by virtue of the fact that the US is also gravely guilty of human rights violations (e.g. Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, etc.), it can in good conscience cooperate with the Castro tyranny on health.

Whatever the case may be with Ms. Sweig's ethics, her solution shows no evidence of having considered human rights or the millions who must constitute one of 3 parts to any solution; or that because they are the victims they should be preferentially considered as decisons are made on changes to US policy for Cuba or Guantanamo. Her solution just ignores them and hands over Guantanamo to the Cuban who for 50 years has been criminally abusing his patients and victims while endlessly boasting about 'his health care system'.

Is her solution really what the US government should do to improve its image internationally?

Of course not. A true solution must as a minimum require Castro to recognize the rights of the millions and likely majority he unabashedly calls 'gusanos' (worms). Given irreconcilable ethical differences, one possible process to implement it, in the most general terms is outlined here.

Abortion and Population Decline in Cuba (Updated)

The Cuban regime is reportedly providing the population with methods for aborting in the convenience of their homes and with no intermediary other than a pill.

Who is being aborted? Might more than a few of these be children conceived 'accidentally' through sex with tourists?

Thus the regime offers tourists hotels, meals, transportation and for entertainment, well, sex with prostituted Cuban adolescents remedied through a private, easy, do-it-yourself abortion. That's 5 sources of income. Multiply that by 2 million tourists (or 4 if some US Citizens get their 'right'). How's that for productivity?

What a deal.

UPDATED APRIL 28 AT 8:39 PM FROM ARGENTINA

According to the Wall Street Journal's Marketwatch the Cuban regime has reported that it's population shrank by 700 thousand in 2008, about 6%, and for the third consecutive year. The Latin American Herald Tribune has also reported the accelarated decline. In another report, Cubaencuentro.com, a Spain based news website, contradicts both of the former by a substantial margin, reporting a decline of only 7,737 inhabitants.

How they could have arrived at such different figures is a story in itself given they all claim the Cuban regime's media as their source.

At the higher rate, Cuba's population will be diminished to its pre-Castro coup 1959 level in 7 years; the number of Cubans in exile will have surpassed those in Cuba in around 11; and the Castro tyranny's captive slave force will have become extinct in 15. Conceivably he will then be 97 and utterly alone, with not one Cuban left to enslave, imprison or execute; and Cubans in Cuba gone.

Socialism or death? If the larger rate is true it appears as if death will have won. Castro's post-revolutionary coup will have proven itself evolution's enemy or as Christians would put it, it will have been decisIvely condemned for attempting to subvert God's plan for man.

While pópulation is decreasing in Cuba, support for abortion in the United States has significantly dropped. According to Pew Research the number in the US who believe abortion should be legal dropped from 54% to 46%; in men from 53% to 43% and in women from 54% to 49%. The drop occurred between August 2008 and April 2009.

Increasing recognition of the rights of a human in an embryonic stage is very good news for the United States. Evidently the nation is moving towards a more complete grasp of the meaning of the US declaration of Independence, where it states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

For Cuba's Castro these unalienable rights are evidently not yet self-evident, either for humans in an embryonic stage or beyond. One hopes he will grasp this truth too.

Fidel Castro Juega con los Cubanos y Con Sí Mismo

Evidentemente a Fidel Castro no le interesa llegar a un acuerdo para convivir en paz con nosotros los Cubanos.

En su último exabrupto y sin verguenza alguna, nos dice: "Hemos alcanzado no toda la justicia, pero sí el máximo de justicia posible." Anda por ahí desnudo, no se da cuenta o no le importa. Dentro de su delirio de omnipotencia se le olvidó añadir: "Por eso se ha exiliado 33% de la población que teníamos en el 1959 y por eso tengo que mandar a arrestar a cientos de ciudadanos que diariamente reclaman sus derechos. No entienden que el único con derechos aquí soy yo y que por lo tanto soy el que decide cual es el derecho de cada cual."

Miente cuando nos asegura que "Todos los miembros de la Asamblea Nacional son postulados y elegidos por el pueblo, vota más del 90% de la población con derecho a votar." Los miembros de su asamblea nacional no son nominados por el pueblo a no ser que con 'pueblo' se refiera solo a los que están de acuerdo con él (¡no lo vayamos a mal interpretar!), sino pre-seleccionados por el único partido que hay, el partido comunista, el cual siempre ha controlado.

Termina defendiéndose ante Obama con "No pretendemos exportar nuestro sistema político a Estados Unidos." Nuevamente se quedó corto olvidándose añadir que solo pretende seguir inponiéndoselo a 13 millones de cubanos como ha hecho desde su golpe pos-revolucionario de 1959, y como seguirá haciendo mientras pueda y haya quienes le aplaudan.

No desea el bien sino la victoria. La propuesta preliminar para la paz que publiqué ayer caería en inúitiles manos si la enviase a él. En mi opinión, solo la consideraría cuando no le quede remedio pero entonces será muy tarde. Juega con nosotros y con si mismo y su alma eterna está en grave riesgo. Dios existe, es todo justo, todo bueno y no es él, aunque no lo crea.

Cuba: Propuesta Preliminar para un Acuerdo de Paz Entre Cubanos y el Fin del Embargo

Idealmente todos los cubanos se podrían poner de acuerdo para vivir en paz bajo una ideología u otra, pero dada las evidentes dificultades con eso, a continuación presento un esquema general de los requisitos mínimos para un acuerdo de paz que podría implementarse:

1.El régimen Castrista consentiría a que los opositores del régimen dentro de Cuba se organizacen para participar en la elección de representantes para todos los opositores residentes o exiliados; y se comprometería a no intervenir en forma alguna con este proceso.

2.Ambos lados (los electos representantes de la oposición y el régimen Castrista) se reunirían para llegar a un acuerdo sobre como dividir la totalidad del territorio nacional del achipiélago en por lo menos 2 partes según los siguientes requisitos:

--Cada parte sería independientemente gobernada.

--Todo cubano tendría el derecho de elegir en cual parte desea residir y se le proveerían los medios de expresarlo ante la presencia de observadores independientes internacionales.

--El tamaño de cada parte sería proporcional a la cantidad de Cubanos que expresen su deseo de habitar o pertenecer a ella.

3.Los representantes autorizados por cada parte firmarían un acuerdo de división territorial y un pacto de no-agresión que incluría todo lo necesario para convivencia pacífica y que también les requeriría conjuntamente solicitarle a los EEUU el fin del embargo.

4.A cada parte se le requiriría ratificar el pacto ante sus respectivos constitutyentes.

Entiéndase que esto es solo un esquema muy general y en adición que intencionalmente no he incluído un número de provisiones opcionales que podrían haber sido incluídas. Veamos primero a donde se puede llegar con lo expuesto aquí.

Le solicito al régimen Castrista y a sus opositores que tengan la amabilidad de meditar sobre esta propuesta.

Por ejemplo, me interesa conocer sobre los beneficios y riesgos que ven para ambas partes. ¿Como se podrían aumentar y disminuir respectivamente para ambos lados?

Cuba: Preliminary Proposal for a Peace Agreement between Cubans and the End of the Embargo

Ideally all Cubans could agree on living together under one ideology or another, but given the evident difficulties with that, what follows is a general outline of the minimum requirements for a peace agreement that could be implemented:

1.The Castro regime would consent for opponents of the regime inside Cuba to organize and participate in the election of representatives for all resident and exiled opponents; and would commit to not intervene in any way with this process.

2.Both sides (elected opposition representatives and the Castro regime) would meet to reach an agreement on the division of the total territory of the Cuban archipielago into at least 2 parts with the following required conditions:

--Each of the parts would be independently governed.

--All Cubans would be entitled to freely choose which part they want to live in and be provided with the means to express it under the supervision of international independent observers.

--The size of each of these 2 parts would be proportional to the number of Cubans who express their desire to inhabit or belong to it.

3.Authorized representatives of each part would sign a territorial division and mutual non-agression pact which would include all that would be forseebly necessary for peaceful convivience and also require both to jointly request an end to the US embargo.

4.Each part would be required to ratify it independently with their respective constituencies.

Please note that this is only a very general outline and that, in addition, a number of optional provisions have intentionally not been included. Let's see if we can first get somewhere with this.

I ask the Castro regime and its opponents to kindly meditate on it.

For example, I'm interested in learning what benefits and risks Cubans see for both parts? How might these be respectively increased and diminished for both sides?

Chavez shows Obama only one side of Eduardo Galeano

Eduardo Galeano became today the author of the 5th best selling book in Amazon.com a day after Hugo Chavez handed Obama a copy of his 1971 book "Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent". Isn't Chavez aware of Galeano's of 2003 essay: "Cuba Hurts"? If he is, why didn't he also provide Obama with a copy of that?

Is it because even Galeano, a pro-Castro and anti-Cuban dissident socialist recognizes the cruelty of his idol and the rights of non-supporters of the Cuban regime? Indeed, in said essay, Galeano agrees with Rosa Luexmbourg, another socialist, whom he quotes:

"Freedom for only the supporters of the government, however many there may be, is not freedom. Real freedom is freedom for those who think differently."

"The recent wave of executions and arrests in Cuba is ...very bad news-and very sad-for those of us ...who also believe that freedom and justice go together or not at all...

Cuba's Raul Castro Ready to Talk about 'Everything' ...but with Obama

Just a few days ago Ricardo Alarcón president of the Castro regime's 'National Assembly' declared there were no political prisoners in Cuba. Yet yesterday Raul Castro announced he was ready to talk about them. Hmm. Confusing signals.

Switching yesterday from bad cop (Fidel) to good cop, Mr. Raul Castro declared he was willing to talk about everything: political prisoners, freedom of the press. He cautioned that this could only occur however 'without casting the slightest shadow over Cuba's sovereignty' or 'without the slightest violation of the Cuban people's right to self determination'.

Here's Mr. Raul Castro responding to Obama yesterday:

As expected, he was addressing President Obama and the United States, not the millions of Cubans who charge him and his brother precisely for usurping our right to self-determination. Somehow he and his brother have fallen under the delusion that they and Obama were elected to represent the people of Cuba.

Castro of course may forever try anything (through his emissaries in Trinidad) to shift the subject to just issues like human driven climate change and world capitalism's financial crisis. Obama will surely have no problem addressing any of these, with the caveat that unlike Castro, he has no grave crimes to hide.

Hiding his crimes behind an array of just causes to distract the world's attention is the ploy Castro's used for 50 years to get the sympathy he needs while he crushes Cubans. "The executioner's hand is always well hidden" (B. Dylan).

In Trinidad, if attacked by Chavez and Castro's other representatives, it'll be up to Obama to insist on critical analysis and call a spade a spade as thus far he has eloquently done.

Castro might then shift from flattering to ideologically vilifying Obama; that's all he'd have left, for again (except for the stand he shares with Castro on abortion), the latter has committed no crimes. In addition, it will be very hard for Castro to accomplish this inside Cuba.

The discussion would then open up to all the real issues, not just Castro's favorites.

The Washington Post has just published an eye opening editorial for the blind entitled "Wrong Subject" where it argues that it's: "...easier to demand concessions for Cuba than to defend Venezuelan democracy." It's worth reading even for those who are not in denial about Cuba.

What Castro Wants from Obama...as he Confesses that Retired US Military Officers say the US Needs him for Protection from Drug Lords - Part V

In today's reflection Castro argued that even retired US military officers are on his side, that they finally recognize that they need him to protect the US against drug lords. I wonder what Castro's General Ochoa would have said about that, had he not been executed by Castro presumably for drug trafficking.

Ochoa was a widely popular and charismatic military leader and Commander of Castro's armed forces in Angola. Indeed in his trial a defendant testified that he had been led to believe that drug trafficking was approved by the regime's leadership.

In the new role he aspires to as the hemisphere's drug czar, who might Castro now really want executed and why?

Did the witness' (on video) testimony lead to an independent investigation about narcotrafficking at the head of the regime? Of course not. How could it? There is no real separation of powers; everything leads back to Castro. No sane Cuban would consider requesting that the Castros be investigated for narcotrafficking or anything else for that would be a counter-revolutionary act by Castro standards. Whoever would have dared to request it would likely have ended up like General Ochoa.

What does Castro want from Obama...as he Blames the US for Stealing 'Human Resources' - Part IV

Castro shamelessly blames the US for 'stealing human resources'. He wants exiles in Cuba but as slaves, that is, working for his illegitimate state for $15 monthly in whatever task he wishes while threatening them to remain silent about his presumed right to own them. When Cubans try to make a living on their own or non-violently object they are of course publicly condemned by his regime as worms, corrupt, counter-revolutionaries in order to incite to incite mobs against them.

He claims he does not want handouts and yet he slaps a 20% tax on any remittances in US dollars of exiles to their families. Not interested in money and handouts and yet taxing 'mercenaries' and their families? Again, according to the Oxford dictionary a 'mercenary' is one 'primarily concerned with money or other reward'. Who is the mercenary, the thousands who charitably send a remittance to family or the one who taxes it, King George?

What does Castro want from Obama...as he attacks US imperialism and shifts focus to Bay of Pigs and School of the Americas- Part III

Hoping to fend off attacks on his legitimacy, Castro dedicated a whole reflection to past US interventions in Cuba and Latin America as if opposing a tyranny was comparable to overthrowing a democratically elected government.

Justifiably he condemns the School of the Americas and tortures in Guantanamo probably hoping that with this he can neutralize attacks on his harassment, silencing, imprisonment, torture. and execution of those who have dared to question his legitimacy the past 50 years. He apparently reasons that since the US has done it, he can do it too.

Additionally, but no less importantly, he wants to hide the virtual slavery of Cuba's workers who (unless they are there to protect him) work for an average of US$15 monthly in jobs determined by Castro's illegitimate state.

He fails to acknowledge however that Obama is against torture or the persecution of political opponents or that while he objects to unregulated capitalism he does not condone Castro's brand of slavery. As far as one can tell, Obama is no McCarthy or King George III.

Castro has called Obama's lifting of some restrictions a 'positive step' but he has certainly not expressed joy at the idea of having to share Cuba with compatriots in exile. Indeed, he has still not announced that in response to Obama's concession he will stop attempting to prevent Cubans outside in or those inside out.

Exiles are coming back? Those mercenaries? Castro focused his reflection on the fact that under Kennedy and the CIA's umbrella, Cuban exiles attempted to rid Cuba of his incipient dictatorship him in 1961. A mercenary, according to the Oxford dictionary is (as an adjective) 'primarily concerned with money or other reward' or (as a noun) is 'a hired soldier in foreign service'. That describes Castro's relationship with the Soviet Union rather well but not the Cuban exiles who cruised into the Bay of Pigs (Playa Girón) to free their homeland of a second consecutive dictatorship. These were family men who with only weeks of training and the compelling purpose to reestablish democracy in their homeland were ill advised to accept the assistance of the CIA. If anything it was an act of desperation given that they were not prepared, were not career soldiers by any stretch of the imagination and had no control whatsoever over the air support they had been promised but never received. Blindly heroic, they assumed a tremendous and miscalculated risk which all paid for either with death, imprisonment and shattered family lives; and without achieving their purpose.

Castro is slandering these Cuban patriots because it was he who most certainly behaved then as the mercenary, the one 'primarily concerned with money or other reward'. Yes, Castro wanted money, a deal, like now and that is a fact. He was willing then, as he is now, to sell Cubans for money or other merchandise. He kept them for ransom and released them only after it was delivered. He had and has no respect whatsoever for his compatriots, publicly and frequently characterizing them as worms or merchandise to be traded in the market with those he declares enemies and even with friends.

What does Castro want from Obama ...and Obama from Castro? - Part II

In his (now) 5 reflections since Obama's limited lifting of restrictions on Cuba, Castro alludes to an array of issues but, unaccustomed to dialogue, has thus far disregarded the invitation to discuss the civil rights of Cubans, political prisoners and democratic elections. That's either not good for appetizers or not relevant to Castro for he would surely be deprived of power and could even end up being tried, convicted and imprisoned or placed under house arrest.

Not surprisingly, as he prepares to meet hemispheric leaders in Trinidad today, Obama gently touched on Castro's omissions in an Op Ed published today.

"Each of our countries has pursued its own democratic journey, but we must be joined together in our commitment to liberty, equality, and human rights. That is why I look forward to the day when every country in the hemisphere can take its seat at the table consistent with the Inter-American Democratic Charter. And just as the United States seeks that goal in reaching out to the Cuban people, we expect all of our friends in the hemisphere to join together in supporting liberty, equality, and human rights for all Cubans."

Castro surely knows he can't forever avoid what he omits to address but he appears to be content with maintaining the status quo as long as possible for it has provided him with unchecked power in Cuba and a massive following from hemispheric leaders angry at past US foreign policy.

Yet it won't be that easy for him to get away with it this time given that Obama does not share his predecessors' views or foreign policies. Obama can agree with much of what Castro supposedly stands for without making further concessions for as long as Castro stubbornly fails to satisfactorily address Cuban political prisoners, civil rights and democratic elections.

What does Castro Want from Obama? Dialog or Subservience?

Judging from the 4 reflections he's published since the announcement on the lifting of some restrictions on Cuba 2 days ago, it's not clear whether Castro wants to dialog and negotiate with Obama or dictate, or quantums of both.

Obama is fortunate not to have been born in Cuba for he would surely be in grave danger of being silenced for acting on his political beliefs.

At this point the question seems to be not what Obama should respond (he already has), but how. Perhaps the US President should guide himself by what he would do if he were running for office against Castro in the U.S. or Cuba. There are substantial differences of course, for would Castro be willing to debate him or other Cubans on Cuban National TV? Perhaps he should ask Castro what would happen if he were Cuban and attempt to make his political views publicly known throughout the nation, encourage others to follow him, form a political party and call elections.

In my next few posts and if all goes well, I'll be posting my reflections on Castro's 4 latest reflections, that is, those he's published since the announcement. Obama serves it into Cuba and Latin America's Castro side of the Court

No, this is probably not like Richard Nixon's China Ping Pong diplomatic initiative in 1971. Hopefully it's a real break from the past and human rights will not take a back seat this time.

As major newspapers (WSJ, WP, NY Times) report today that Obama has ordered the lifting of restrictions on Cuban Americans wanting to visit their native land, the uncensored Cuban exile online media reported that a Puerto Rican (and therefore U.S. citizen) was violently arrested 2 days ago in Holguín, Cuba. Her crime was to publicly question Ricardo Alarcón regarding the constant violation of human rights by the tyranny and the illegitimacy of the constitution imposed on the Cuban people. Alarcón is the president of the Castro regime's so called 'National Assembly'. The US or other international media has yet to report on the Puerto Rican's arrest or his whereabouts.

Why should anyone believe that Cuban Americans traveling to Cuba and daring to question the regime's legitimacy and repression will experience a different fate than said Puerto Rican American? Now that the Obama Administration has lifted restrictions on Cuban Americans traveling to Cuba from the U.S., what will it do if any are arrested for doing what this Puerto Rican American has done?

In addition, how and what will most of the world know if Cuban Americans traveling to their native land are subsequently imprisoned for political dissent? What response can they expect from the US and international media?

Oh, that's easy, the Wall Street Journal has now reported that the "...Obama administration will allow U.S. telecom companies and other providers to apply for licenses to do business in Cuba, including setting up television and mobile phone service..."

Does that mean that the same US and international media that has not reported even bothering to visit Antuñez and the other dissidents will keep US and world public opinion informed? Does it mean that the same media which hundreds of millions access through Google's news and blog search engine is henceforth going to prioritize human rights, even if it's only about Cubans?

Does it also mean that Cubans on the island, the majority of whom live on salaries of US $15 per month will soon be able to afford access to the Internet? Does it mean that the regime will not block Internet sites or TV stations with information that oppose it or question its legitimacy?

Furthermore, will all Cubans be allowed in by Castro (or just those that will keep silent)?

It almost certainly does not mean any of the foregoing.

Meanwhile Antúnez and the 4 dissidents in Placetas presumably under a state of siege by state security and prevented from access to liquid nutrients have reported that one of them is in a precarious medical state. Accordingly they have requested that a physician selected by them be allowed to assist her while expressing their fear and objection to any physicians that might be provided by the regime.

CREDIT FOR OBAMA

One must recognize that unlike some US Congressmen the Obama Administration has been cautiously responding to internal and international pressure to 'normalize' relations with Castro (like Truman and Eisenhower did in 1952-1959 with Batista). Fulfilling his promise to Cuban Americans, his administration has consistently insisted that prior to normalizing relations, political prisoners must be released, free speech and civil rights guaranteed and genuinely democratic elections held.

But what else does 'normalizing relations' mean? How can relations with a regime accused of grave crimes against its people ever be 'normal'? Is the Obama administration somehow preparing to join the chorus of Latin American presidents led by Lula (Brazil) and Chavez (Venezuela) and pursue a policy of obstruction of justice in Cuba? Is it going to implicitly recognize 'Castro' as 'Cuba' and thereby tragically reinforce the precedent of normalized relations with future tyrannies that may yet emerge (in Latin America or Cuba)?

Will it expect like so many others that Cuban Americans just accept that the Castros may have committed (and continue to do so unabashed) whatever crimes and yet be not only protected by US and Latin America presidents from any accountability but be engaged as agents of just change and even pillars of justice? Are Cubans expected to approve of the legitimization of criminals just because as a result of the totalitarian state imposed upon them they have not been not able to bring them to trial yet? Is this what some mean by 'reconciliation'?

Surely this is not Obama's project but what then does the The Washington Post mean when it contends that "... as a candidate, Obama promised to seek closer relations with Cuba, and ...as president, he has signaled that he intends to move toward a greater openness...."

No, the WP has it wrong, I don't believe that Obama intends to become the regime's accomplice even as the temptation and pressure to succumb to a false fix is being blatantly broadcasted everywhere; except of course in that portion of the Cuban community exiled for political reasons and in the legitimate non-violent opposition protesting bare handed within.

SHIFT IN STRATEGY THAT BEGAN WHEN?

The Cuban American National Foundation recently published an intelligent and practical proposal that suggests, for the most part, a more coherent path to future US-Cuba relations; one that allies the US government with those Cuban people pushing for democracy and not with criminals posing as liberators and revolutionaries or its supporters.

While the proposal could be improved, its recommendation for a shift in the US policy since 1959 is a step in the right direction and it is this that the Obama Administration appears to be listening to. I would suggest that the shift must go further back, that is, it must also change the course taken in 1952 and in 1898. The people of the US and Cuba need to build the basis for a true, lasting, just and mutually respectful friendship, not one between legitimately elected leaders in one and a tyrant in the other; not one where the more powerful party in the relationship capitalizes on the vulnerability of the other. Hopefully that day is on its way.

It should go without saying that the same applies to Latin America, Canada, Spain and the rest of the world, for unlike the Obama Administration and with few exceptions (e.g. Eastern Europe), they have turned their back on the Cuban people and joined forces with the illegitimate unelected regime which continues to pretend to permanently enslave us.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Cuba's constitution was approved in 1940, consolidating it as a sovereign democratic republic, requiring separation of executive, legislative and judicial powers and guaranteeing all of the civil liberties that have been denied by the current totalitarian state for the past 50 years. This constitution was violated by Batista through a coup in 1952 but only 15 days later Harry Truman normalized relations, recognizing him as Cuba's legitimate leader and Eisenhower continued with this policy until he was forced to abandon it.

Batista was ousted by a massive popular uprising coordinated by a student movement, urban dissenters and Fidel Castro's armed 26 of July movement. After its success, while recognizing Cuba's constitution, Castro immediately and treacherously began violating it. He unconstitutionally appointed presidents, imprisoned revolutionaries who had fought by his side, repressed civil liberties and freedom of the press, installed government informers in every corner and thereby by 1976 had consolidated a communist totalitarian state.

First tens, then hundreds of thousands fled while thousands were executed and imprisoned. Over two million citizens or 33% of Cuba's 1959 population eventually were forced into exile; however the first generation of these has died and the second is close to Castro's age. The remaining exiles are a mix that includes those who were exiled as children in 1960 (and their descendants) as well as thousands who were born in Cuba after the birth of Castro's 'revolutionary' totalitarian state and subsequently either fled or were sent abroad for propaganda purposes. Tens of thousands are estimated to have died in Caribbean shark infested waters attempting to flee.

With his totalitarian state consolidated, a substantial portion of the population in exile and all media under his control, Castro claimed that a new constitution had been almost unanimously approved in 1976. It was later modified by his regime in 1992, 2000 and 2002. Attempts to modify it by other Cubans have been regularly ignored for under said new 'constitution', the regime's 'National Assembly' is the only one with the right to do so, even though they are not legitimately elected by the Cuban people (including exiles).

Yet Venezuela's elected president Chavez, evidently hoping to pressure Obama, recently asked the world: "Why does Cuba continue to be left out of the Summit of the Americas, if Cuba is a friend of Latin American and Caribbean countries?"

Who is 'Cuba' for you, President Chavez? Who is the one leaving the majority of the Cuban people out if not you and your ilk?

Antúnez y 4 Disidentes Cubanos en el Calvario

Según entendemos hoy Viernes Santo Antúnez (Jorge Luis García Pérez) permanece rodeado por fuerzas armadas de Seguridad del Estado, bajo estado de sitio en su propia casa en Placetas, Cuba, junto a 4 otros disidentes en ayuno de líquidos. Según entendemos, aún se les impide obtener los alimentos líquidos necesario para continuarlo sin tener que morir, y sabemos que con esto preteden romper el espíritu de los 5, como intentaron con Jesús.

Por otro lado, hemos visto como congresistas del Black Caucus, los sumos sacerdotes de hoy, visitaron a Cuba, y no solo los ignoraron a pesar de varias protestas, sino que solidarizaron con los que los privan de alimentos, e intentan debilitarlos o matarlos.

Si bien los medios masivos de comunicación, a pesar de nuestras protestas, no los han visitado aún, ya en un editorial el Washington Post denunció a estos Congresistas cómplices de vuestra tortura.

Nosotros los católicos sabemos que el camino a la Vida es una Cruz, estrecho y doloroso. Vivimos de esta fe en el Resucitado, el cual es el alimento perfecto para nuestros cuerpos y almas.

Ojalá, que si Ustedes son Católicos la tiranía no impida que se les lleve a Jesús en forma sacramental, y que algún sacerdote católico cubano lo exiga.

Sabemos por esta fe que todo esto no es en vano, que Dios es infinitamente bondadoso y justo y que no se le escapa nada. Ustedes saben que no caminan solos o en vano.

Google, the Mainstream News Media, Blogs and Cuba : What I thought was not so crazy after all

The news media has traditionally been considered the 4th power in any democratic republic. With so many newspapers facing closure however, Google, blogs and the social networks are moving in to drive the formation of public opinion. So much is known. What is less understood is what it means. How will having a search engine in charge of effectively determining the news people read impact public opinion, political decisions, world events and human rights?

It's historically self-evident that bias and prejudice can result in people being abused or killed so one would think that Google, which prides itself as being a 'force for the good', would be careful to avoid it. Yet is that possible? Can one really suppose that Google's engineers, or their search algorithms, are free of moral bias. Hardly. This would not perhaps be a problem if Google were not a near monopoly but if to be visible in the world one must be found on Google, then for some it can be a matter of life and death that Google be a force for the good.

GOOGLE AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA'S PREJUDICED COVERAGE OF 'CUBA'

As Congress deliberates US policy towards Cuba this week, the 7 events below have been reported by at least someone on Cuba:

ONE: Former political prisoner Antúnez (Jorge Luis Garcia Perez) and 4 other dissidents have been under a state of Siege by Cuban State Security for over a week and are not allowed to obtain the liquid nutrients they need to survive. See my posts on this issue here, here, here, and here.

TWO: ON March 30 Amnesty International attempted to alert the world to the life threatening situation Antúnez and the other dissidents are confronting as I write.

THREE: On March 29 Yoani Sanchez and about 10 others surprised the world when they staged an unexpected performance at Havana's Art Biennial. They did a parody of Fidel Castro and took a free speech swing at the totalitarian state. They were subsequently accused by Castro of counter tyrannical 'provocation'.

FOUR: Politically motivated arrests have been reported almost daily in the Cuban exile media (see Miscelaneas de Cuba.com). IN march 2009 alone 300 acts of political intimidation were reported by the dissident Cuban Human Rights Council.

FIVE: On March 27, 1000 former Cuban political prisoners, forced into exile, have announced they will meet to wake up the world about Castro's assault on Cubans' human rights for 50 years.

SIX: On March 29 Castro's regime and the US opened a US-Cuba art exhibit with works from New York's Chelsea.

SEVEN: The US Senate and the House of Representatives are deciding on whether to pass legislation to allow all US citizens to travel to Cuba (The Cuba Travel Act - S. 428), the lifting of other restrictions and even reconciliation with Castro (The Cuba Reconciliation Act (H.R. 188).

Of these Google and renowned US and international media powerhouses such as the New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, The Los Angeles Times, and The BBC reported only on 2, that is, on events 6 and 7, but hardly or not at all on 1 to 5 even though people's lives are evidently and imminently in danger and news on this issue would or should certainly influence US and world opinion on the last 2 issues. Nor did financial considerations prevent these renowned papers from attending and reporting on an Art Fair in Havana. They has their journalists and camarographers right there. Yet not one took the 2 hour trip to see Antúnez and the 4 other dissidents under siege by Cuban State Security at the latter's home in Placetas.

So what is driving this prejudiced media coverage with respect to Cuba? Could it be that the mainstream news media is so financially stretched that it no longer has sufficient resources to cover Cuba? No. Well I really mean, Google doesn't think so. Granted that Google's reporting is constantly in flux, but that's not the case with the 'secret' search algorithms it implements to determine what is relevant and to what. Database programmers and any intelligent person will understand immediately that human decisions and biases and not some random or chance mechanisms determine what is found when searching a database and that Google is no exception.

Accordingly I attempted a few searches last night to get a ballpark idea of just how Google, the major newspapers and the blogs are informing the world about Cuba.

After all, we have US senators like Richard Lugar who without a blink are quite willing to toss out any considerations of conscience to satisfy what he believes the world believes should be the US policy towards Cuba. On Lugar's very recent letter to Obama the Washington Post reported:

"The nearly 50-year-old economic embargo against Cuba, Lugar (R-Ind.) said in a March 30 letter to Obama, puts the United States at odds with the views of the rest of Latin America, the European Union and the United Nations, and 'undermines our broader security and political interests in the Western Hemisphere'."

RESULTS OF LAST NIGHT'S INVESTIGATION

Upon performing a Google news search for 'Cuba' last night 2, not 7, big stories appeared on the first search page. Indeed, Google reported an astounding 517 news articles on 'Rep. Barbara Lee heading to Cuba to talk tourism and trade'. It sure looks like according to Google and the mainstream media the forthcoming vote in Congress is a done deal Americans get ready. We're back in Cuba just like the good old Batista days.

Granted, Google concurrently reported that there were supposedly 113 stories on how an unexpected performance by Yoani Sanchez and several others at the Cuban Art Biennial had sparked a 'Cuban free speech debate' (news story # 3 above). However, upon checking it out I discovered that this was a distortion. There were only 5 that were about that particular event. The others were unrelated as of last night.

So what did a Google news search on 'Cuba' reveal about what is happening to Antúnez and the 5 dissidents (story # 1 above). Of the major newspapers only the Miami Herald had published anything and they didn't even visit the site of the siege. The Herald's was the only story on Antúnez, that Google reported in the first 25 pages of a search for news on Cuba. Amnesty International's story on Antúnez didn't appear either when the Google news search term was 'Cuba'.

So I did a Google news search specifying the key words 'Antúnez Amnesty International' and this resulted in exactly 1 news article, but in German. Not relevant to Cuba says Google and what's left of the mainstream media.

So with the silence of the mainstream media on Cuba human rights issues we are left to what the blogs tell us but what does Google do in this case?

I challenge anyone to do a Google blog search (exclusively) using the keyword 'Cuba' to see how much you can find on human rights or morality, or on the first 5 Cuba stories of the week I reported above.

That's precisely what I did only to discover that nothing resembling morality, human rights or democracy (all fundamental human and US values) on Cuba can be found until the page 7 of Google's blog search results on that keyword ('Cuba'). Nothing on the 5 news stories listed above can be found on the first 25 pages Google blog search pages for 'Cuba'.

It was only on the 7th page of Google's blog search results that I first found something, a listing of a Diario de Las Américas' story arguing that travel to Cuba will not bring democracy. Then on page 8 there's Mark Masferrer's post: 'Uncommon Sense: Ban on Cuba travel puts US. on the right side'. Uncommon indeed, for in Google's Cuba it's again silence on morality and human rights until blog search results page 12 where I found "Brave souls from Cuba plan to meet", the story of 1000 former Cuban political prisoners, forced into exile, meeting to denounce the tyranny. Surely this would be something important for the world and Washington to know right now, right? Not really says Google and the bloggers it prioritizes.

Only on page 13 of the search results did I find a listing of a blog story on Castro accusing Yoani Sanchez and her friends of "provocation" at the Art Biennial (story #3 above). On page 15 Google once again cites Mark Masferrer Uncommon Sense, this time with a story arguing against a renowned pro-Castro author and blogger who contended that experiencing hunger has actually been good for Cubans. Makes Cubans resilient. (She should consider trying her own medicine for 50 years along with a $15 a monthly Cuban salary for anything else she may perhaps need. )

Then Google was silent again for 5 more search pages, that is, until page 20 of the search results on 'Cuba' where it finally listed a story Amnesty International's 3 day old alert to the world on the urgency and gravity of the situation Antúnez and the 5 dissidents under siege are facing (story #1) . How's that for obstruction of justice when it comes to Cuba human rights by the world's news/blog search almost monopoly!

I then continued until page 25 but found nothing else. That's what Google had on human rights, morality and democracy in its first 250 listings last night (10 listings for each of 25 search pages). Of 250 stories listed on a Google blog search for 'Cuba', only 6 (and beginning only on page 7) of the search results were about human rights, morality or democracy. That's approximately 2% of all listings on 'Cuba' in those first of 25 of 100 pages of search results. The other 98% of the blog stories listed were more or less about how Americans were packing their bags to return to the good old Batista days.

ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION: THERE ARE 5 CASES THIS WEEK SUGGESTIVE OF CENSORSHIP BY GOOGLE AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA ON ISSUES OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN CUBA

Arguably the reason I didn't find anything about Antúnez, human rights and the morality of lifting restrictions on Cuba, etc. is that no one is writing about it on the blogs. To test this hypothesis I did a search on Google blogs for 'Antúnez Placetas'. There were 15 pages of blogs covering it (150 listings!); however, practically all of them seemed to be written by Cubans opposed to tyranny, like me. Why weren't they listed in the first 25 pages of a Google blog search on 'Cuba'?

I then searched for 'Cuba morality' and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that my post yesterday, "The Morality of Lifting Restrictions on Cuba: The China Question, The China Lesson", was ranked 2nd in relevance'. So what could this mean? Searching for this same post on Google ---> blogs, but using only using 'Cuba' as the search term it was not to be found in Google's first 25 blog search result pages on 'Cuba'. One would actually have to be interested in the human rights of Cubans to find it and use 2 keywords 'Cuba morality', not just 'Cuba', to discover it. Evidently Google presumes that those searchers interested in 'Cuba' alone are not, but that says more about Google's values then about its searchers for news or blogs about Cuba.

Connect the dots and what does one get: The most plausible conclusion is that the human rights of Cubans and morality are just not central issues when it comes to the general topic of 'Cuba', as far as Google is concerned. Otherwise how can one explain that those 15 pages of blogs on Antúnez and my own post on morality did not appear listed in those first 25 pages of Google's blog search results on 'Cuba'?

Google can kiss goodbye to its claim to be 'a force for the good' if something further happens to Antúnez or to Yoani Sanchez and the dissidents who took that free speech swing at Castro 5 days ago.

UPDATE - MAY 2, 2009 11:20 AM FROM ARGENTINA

The problem continues. While the piece you are reading is very visible in Google blogs, one that I posted yesterday entitled "Return Guantanamo to Whom? has been blocked, that is, it's not listed under blogs either by dates or relevance. I have checked 5, 8 and 18 hours later using the keywords 'Guantanamo' or the whole title 'Return Guantanamo to Whom' and several other combinations but none yielded results on Google blogs, although one can find it on the web if one really tries.

Maybe Google should subscribe to my Atom feeds since it was reported there in seconds.

Google is a little more subtle than Castro's Granma, for it freely and conveniently publishes blogs on human rights violations in Cuba but then expertly hides them from view.

I obtained slightly better results with www.metacrawler.com/ but that searches the web and not just blogs. Not surprisingly it obtained its results from Google's database.

UPDATE - MAY 3, 2009 1:24 AM FROM ARGENTINA

I just checked and 'Return Guantanamo to Whom' is finally visible on searching Google ==> blogs 'return guantanamo to whom', by date. The only problem is that I discovered it at 1:17 AM the next day, about 31 hours after posting it. Given that I had checked 18 hours after posting and it wasn't there, Google took 18 to 31 hours to list said blog post by date. This fact must be evaluated in the context that I had to report it in this blog post you are reading, which I know has a high visibility (at least up until now).

Why does Google (at least temporarily) block the visibility of blog posts that denounce human rights abuses in Cuba, while immediately posting those that promote it as a tourist destination, etc.?

UPDATE BELOW ON MAY 5, 2009 AT 4:35 pm FROM ARGENTINA

Almost 2 and 1/2 hours after posting "Gesture from Castro: Hotel Internet Access Now Out of Bounds for Cubans" one still can't find it, sorting by date, using the keywords 'Cuba Internet' in Google ==>blogs.

Nor can one find Cubaencuentro's news report on which it was based if one searches, with those same keywords, by date, on Google==> News.

An almost duplicate post titled "Hotel Internet Access Now Out of Bounds for Cubans" in Invisible Cuba (my new blog) is also invisible in Google blogs if searched with the keywords 'Cuba Internet'.

What else could one have expected from Google when it comes to human rights violations?

Almost 36 hours after publishing "Cuban Police Beat Up 3 Women Attempting to Visit Dissident Antúnez (Video)" it cannot be found by the Google search engine or the others that depend on it. The world's most used search engine continues to subtly but systematically censor news coming from Cuban dissidents related to human rights violations. Meanwhile many newspapers are plagued by gaps in their Cuba coverage (e.g. live reporting on Antúnez) and, like Google, they adopt increasingly subjective editorial criteria. As far as coverage of Cuba is concerned Google and most of the news media have been reduced to the pursuit of clicks.

My post in Invisible Cuba blog titled "Cuban Police Beat Up 3 Women Attempting to Visit Dissident Antúnez (Video)" is finally found in Google's search engine but only 4 hours after reporting Google's censorship in my previous update herein and as an update in the story; and 40 hours after originally posting it.

However it cannot be found if one searches by date using 'Cuba' or 'Cuba repression' as keywords.

The Cuban tyranny was elected to the United Nations Human Rights council the same day as my post. That piece of news is of course is easily found on Google.

By blocking my post for 40 hours Google made it effectively invisible in blog searches by date. In addition, given a human rights bias that favors Castro and friends while hiding posts by Castro's opponents (exiles, etc.) it effectively makes it invisible in blog searches by 'relevance'.

UPDATED ON JUNE 21, 2009 BELOW, FROM ARGENTINA

Now Cubanos vs. Muchos, (in Spanish) posted on June 18, 2009, is thus far (3 days asnd 3 hours later) being blocked within Argentina by Google's search engine for blogs.

In addition, on June 19, 2009 Argentina extended my permit to reside here for only one more month, that is, until after parlamientary elections. Previously, they had been renewing it for 3 month periods.

UPDATE JULY 22 - Argentina extended my residency permit on July 21.

Google has blocked my 2 latests posts in English and 1 Spanish from blog searches within Argentina.

The Morality of Lifting Restrictions on Cuba: The China Question, The China Lesson

Pro Cuba-travel and anti-embargo enthusiasts in Congress and elsewhere maintain that it's contradictory to restrict trade relations and travel by US citizens to Cuba while according China a most favorite nation treatment. No one seriously doubts that China does not respect human rights and mercilessly crushes dissidents, except of course, the Chinese government. The BBC recently published a story about the Chinese government contending that a video presumably showing Tibetans being beaten up by Chinese police, was a fabrication by the Dalai Lama. You can see the video below.

While Castro does not deny Chinese brutality, he recently reportedly said that dissidents in China should not go unpunished, suggesting of course that Cuban dissidents can expect the same.

Prior to Richard Nixon's 1971 ping pong initiative to normalize relations with China there was hardly any trade between both countries. Why did Nixon, a crusading anti-communist want to change things? For moral reasons? Obviously not. He was surely aware that China's communist dictatorship repressed dissidents and unabashedly embraced values contrary to the US Bill of Rights. Nixon was undoubtedly motivated by the cheap labor and increased profitability China could provide US manufacturers and assumed that the US would forever wield the upper hand. No one can seriously argue that the US president ever intended to morally convert China to the ethics cherished by a primarily Christian US citizenry. The moral question of strengthening an egregious violator of human rights was either addressed superficially or not at all. We'll convert them with capitalism. That was the idea then with China as it is now with Cuba.

In 1979, just 8 years after Nixon began his diplomatic effort, trade between both nations grew to $2.4 billion. By 1994 it was $48 billion and by 2000 China had become the US' fourth largest supplier with total trade reaching $116 billion: $100 billion imported by the U.S. and only $16 billion exported. Between 2000 and 2008 US imports from China almost tripled to $338 billion, while exports reached only $71 billion. In addition, China is now the US' largest creditor and as of January 2009, it held $739 billion in US treasury bonds.

Thus 38 years after Nixon's strictly economic decision, it's evident that China has the upper hand providing both capital for the US Government and goods for its people.

However, their human rights abuses remain undeterred. Indeed, now they argue that their accusers have confused right with wrong.

"The U.S. claim is totally inaccurate and confuses right and wrong and is unacceptable to China,"

was the explanation when they recently harassed a US ship in international waters. The Dalai lama got no better treatment:

"The Dalai Lama clique is confusing right and wrong," said Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu.

responding to the Dalai Lama's quest for Tibetan cultural autonomy.

Thusly the moral question has popped right back in, the one the US never addressed in 1971, but now China is the one raising it.

Yet economic considerations continue to trump all moral ones for some people in the U.S. It's questionable that even as the nation finds itself near the edge of a precipice sufficient Americans believe that the morality of a foreign policy decision has any impact on its destiny, just like they failed to in 1971 when Nixon initiated his ping pong diplomacy.

Hopefully this will change very soon. However, in yesterday's Freedom to Travel to Cuba Press Conference, the first moral issue mentioned by the Congressmen was that a US citizen's 'right' to travel to Cuba to ride a bike had been violated by the US government. Apparently that was the extent of what was morally at stake for them, or as much as they wanted to address on the moral front. Omit this and omit that about Cuba; otherwise this bill will never pass. The conference ended with the infantile suggestion that the US should just try something 'different' in Cuba and for these Congressmen that apparently means sending a couple of million of US tourists helplessly hoping that somehow they will bring about respect for human rights.

Travel to Cuba. Champagne bottles are being chilled and the media is in a frenzy.

Yes that is China and that other one is Cuba and so what: this is Rome.

The Freedom to Travel to Cuba Press Conference

It will be interesting to see what finally happens this week in both houses of the US Congress as they debate on The Cuba Reconciliation Act ((H.R. 188)) and the Cuba Travel Act ((S.428)). Indeed, perhaps we'll even be able to gauge just how much attitudes and policy towards Cuba and Cubans have changed in the past 111 years, that is, since 1898. Will Congress decide to once again invade and occupy Cuba, as in 1898, but this time with millions of tourists? Will they again decide to support a tyrant, as they regrettably did with Batista? Or will they support the return of the legitimate democracy Cubans had between 1940 and 1952?

Surely some of those who will engage in debate are saving ammunition for the live event but today's Freedom to Travel to Cuba Press Conference (video below) provided clips of the type of spurious arguments we might expect.

One congressman kept repeating that the US should stop 'punishing US citizens'. Punishing US citizens? Of course, while that has not been the intent, it's been the effect. One citizen was prohibited from going bike riding in Cuba. My heart bleeds for her. The poor thing didn't realize there have been over 2 million Cubans exiled in 50 years, tens of thousands estimated to have died at sea trying to escape anything resembling the bike path she wanted to ride, thousands executed with hardly a trial, hundreds in prison for standing up for the same rights the US Bill of Rights happens to protect (let alone the Cuban Constitution trampled upon by back to back tyrants, the first of which was supported by the US while the second, these congressmen wish could be). Surely Joan the bikerider did not watch yesterday as the suddenly generous tyranny (undoubtedly driven by the pending vote by the US Congress) allowed an unprecedented 1 minute of free speech to each of 10 protesters wanting to speak to the tourist crowd surrounded by State Security. Yes, 1 whole minute of the same free speech you have and for the first time in their lifetimes, but not on Cuba's streets. Surely she is not aware that concurrent to this event, 5 other Cuban dissidents were (and remain) under siege in their own house by State Security; or that they aren't permitted to obtain nutrients to continue their liquid fast, begun in February to reclaim their crushed human rights. But perhaps she is aware and the congressmen are too.

How can someone be so perversely selfish to argue that the one being punished is the American who is not allowed to ride her bike in this country which, with US cooperation, has been under the siege of one tyrant since 1952, and without it of another since 1959? What does she and the Congressmen want? That the US begin cooperating with the Castro tyranny just as it did with Batista? It sure didn't work then. Why should it work now?

The cynical charade staged by these US Congressmen didn't end here; it only got worst.

Next we heard about the American punished for traveling to Cuba to distribute bibles. This Joan may remind you of those that claimed that God perhaps willed the Iraq invasion to get rid of those WMDs that were never found. Why didn't she send bibles by international mail like others? Why didn't she try donating them to a US Christian church so they could distribute it through their Cuban affiliate? Did she finally send them (good!) or did she scream? No Fidel, suit yourselves, then no bibles!

Then the pro-Cuba-travel-rights warriors lament over the picture of a Cuban American Iraq veteran who was prohibited from visiting his dying father. Wait. Wasn't it agreed upon last week that Cuban Americans wouldn't be penalized for traveling to Cuba? In addition, couldn't he, since he also holds Cuban citizenship, have gone through Mexico or any other country?

They then continue with the heart breaking story of still another Cuban American, a nostalgic father who wants his US son to visit his country of birth. Surely he has that right but why did he leave? Have any of the reasons changed? In any case,why shouldn't his son be able to go now given the new budget legislation passed last week?

No, no pictures, audio or video of Antúnez and 4 dissidents whose home is under siege right now or of political prisoners and protesters were shown. That's enemy propaganda.

Instead they decided to insult the intelligence of US citizens, including Cuban Americans by arguing that US tourists are the ones who are going to bring significant democratic change to Cuba and quickly. What exactly are these tourists going to do? Have a talk with Fidel with a picture of the Statue of Liberty hanging from their necks? Or perhaps all of those bike rides will do it one way or another? Yes, the pain will soon be over for those Cuban protesters and political prisoners. Just wait until the American tourists arrive with their cameras asking for autographs. Too bad the 2 million or so Canadian, Spaniards, European and Latin American tourists didn't think of that first.

The litany could not end without begging for our sympathy for those humanitarian exchange groups. Like the ones in Berkeley perhaps? I recall once attempting to support a free speech protest in Berkeley only to be kicked out by one activist lecturing me that it was 'for progressives only' and another much older one assuring me that free speech was meant only for Marxists. Now, what is it they want to go to Cuba to exchange?

Finally they treated us to their best blow: Castro doesn't want the US to lift the embargo. Nope. The truth of the matter is he doesn't want Americans travelling to Cuba and providing him with $3-10 billion dollars annually. So let's use reverse psychology. Let's call his bluff. Let's give him those billions of dollars and the tourists too. Americans: will we teach him a lesson he'll never forget.

Send this post to your congressman. Standing up for the human rights of Cubans is standing for the rights of all. Don't buy the double standard they are peddling. Do unto others as you would want them to do onto you.

Performance de Libre Expresión en Bienal de la Habana Mientras 5 Disidentes Siguen Bajo Asedio en Placetas y EEUU Considera Reconciliarse con Castro

Varios artistas acompañados por la renombrada blogger cubana Yoani Sánchez, efectuaron una parodia de Castro en la Exhibición de Arte del X Bienal de la Habana, cada uno hablando con una paloma en su hombro, la cual en contraste a la de Castro en 1959, no se podía estar quieta. Aunque es difícil entender que exactamente dicen, uno puede distinguir claramente las palabras ' libertad' y 'democracia' siendo pronunciadas sin incidentes, con excepción de una teátrica intervención de 2 actores vestidos como milicianos a los lados de cada artista que se manifestaba. Uno de los que habló (Puertoriqueño?) hasta se atrevió a pedir que se permitiese libre acceso al micrófono por 24 horas. Aquí pueden ver el video producido por Yoani Sanchez. Mientras tanto, las fuerzas de la Seguridad del Estado continúan un presunto asedio de Antúnez y 4 otros disidentes llevando a cabo un ayuno de líquidos en Placetas. Hasta donde podemos entender aún les impiden el acceso a nuevos alimentos líquidos y la entrada o salida de cualquier ciudadano a la casa asediada. Sin embargo se ha reportado en otros blogs que los disidentes tienen acceso a un teléfono y a correo electrónico, y también que 'niños' han sido captados en video lanzando piedras a la sitiada casa. La prensa internacional no ha reportado nada y permanecemos sin poder confirmar que está ocurriendo en Placetas.

En Washington, iniciativas paralelas siendo consideradas esta semana en la Cámara de Representantes (H.R. 188) y en el Senado de los Estados Unidos (S.428) respectivamente obligaría a dicho país a reconciliarse con Castro y permitiría que todos sus ciudadanos pudiesen viajar como turistas a Cuba. El Washington Post reportó que 'cresce el momentum para suavizar la política de EE.UU con Cuba' no obstante las protestas de congresistas cubanos-americanos de la Florida y Nueva Jersey.

La libre expresión, un bloqueo de los medios Estadounidenses, internacionales y Cubanos y las políticas de Washington han sido perfectamente coreografiadas hoy coincidentalmente.

Claudio Fuentes, un cubano disidente en la isla, ha escrito sobre su intento de visitar a Antúnez en Placetas. Los siguientes son los derechos que alega le fueron violado:

1. "La imposibilidad de deambular libremente por cualquier zona o región de este territorio nacional y soberano....."

2. "... privados del derecho a realizar una llamada telefónica mientras permanecíamos en calidad de detenidos..."

3. "...Machacaron el simple derecho y libertad de reunión con quien se estime..."

4. "...el derecho ciudadano de informarse libremente por la vía que nos de la gana..."

5. "...y la potestad de difundir luego nuestros pareceres al respecto...El poco Internet que logremos aruñar también servirá para denunciarles y expresarnos."

6. "...después de haber sido devueltas las cámaras fotográficas, me percaté de que habían borrado las fotos que contenía una de ellas..."

Report of Attempt to Visit Antúnez and Cubans under Siege in Placetas

Claudio Fuentes, a Cuban on the island, has written about his attempt to visit Antúnez in Placetas. These are rights which he alleges were violated:

1. "The inability to roam freely in any zone or region of the national and sovereign territory...."

2. "...the right to make a phone call while detained..."

3. "...the simple right and freedom to assemble with whomever we wish..."

4. "...the civil right to freely get information through whichever means we feel like,"

5. "...the power to later disseminate our views about this...The little Internet that we manage to scrounge will also serve to denounce them and to express ourselves."

6. "...after having had my cameras returned, I realized that they had erased the photos contained in one of them..."

Don't Ask Stupid Questions

The technology is terrific; the problem is human. One can with not much difficulty imagine José Marti and Antonio Maceo armed with cellphone video cameras mobilizing insurgents remotely and live, or even texting warnings to the King of Spain and General Weyler. Sure their videos and messages would have been intercepted but at least the mainstream media wouldn't have so easily been able to customize an insurgency narrative that could subsequently be used to justify a US military occupation.

What's being debated today of course is not a US military occupation of Cuba but something far more lucrative: a full fledged multi-billion dollar US tourist invasion, perhaps even led by one-sided activists such as Yoko Ono's US based sister. Not at Placetas, Cuba. No, that is not a tourist destination yet. The mainstream media has something far better for now: New York's 'Chelsea Visits Havana'.

The US President now is of course a black, not McKinley, and he doesn't seem to be buying the story to the dismay of US and international Cuba investors who have been foaming at the mouth as they jockey for position to trade tourism, culture, food, cattle, nickel, cigars, sex, sex changes, genetics, genetic parts, and energy with the 20th and now 21st century's version of Valeriano Weyler.

No, Yoko, or Yoko's sister, supporting a tyranny wasn't John Working Class Hero's idea of love. He was for the life of the people Yoko, not for perpetuating tyrannies. How could you possibly have gotten them mixed up?

Others of course think differently. They believe that art and cultural exchanges will transform the tyranny, not legitimize it while institutionalizing repression, which they contend is no different in Cuba than in China, Bush's Guantanamo or even much of the rest of the world.

Indeed at Havana's 2009 Biennial which opened Friday there is even a painting of torture chambers in Cuba, the U.S.S.R, Argentina, Chile, the Pentagon and the US Guantanamo base! How's that for freedom of expression? Yes, Cuba is so free that they allow, after negotiations 'of course', a painting depicting Villa Marista, a former Catholic School turned torture chamber by the Fair's sponsor. Yes, the same Castro we all know, or no, his brother, or well, no, both and either. The point is that any Cuban (allowed in) and any tourist can sip on a Cuba Libre (rum and Coke) while beholding a painting depicting a Cuban torture chamber, right inside Cuba, with the torturers themselves sponsoring the event, and the tortured, perhaps alive or being crushed just a few miles away. Hey, some might even think: this is even better than abortion on demand (yes, that's legal in Cuba too, just like the US. So much alike now, see!)! How's that for change?

--Can we also get a video of those Cuban State Security forces surrounding those 5 supposedly non-violent protesters in Placetas?

--No, no and no. Period. That's real life stuff. That's not allowed. Just art. Just fiction.

--Could some newspaper perhaps send one of those journalists covering the Biennial or the US Art Fair to Placetas to at least take pictures of the siege?

--No.

--Why not?

--Look, bloggers are already covering it.

--But they are not there! Why can't US and International newspapers there take some pictures and videos of what's happening in Placetas? Maybe even interview both sides?

--Because........Hey look, below you can watch a video of the 5 fasting protesters before they were supposedly surrounded by 'State Security' and as they were being carried out of a nice Cuba hospital by their friends as they left of their own free will. Yes, free will. Free will. Free will. They're free, free, free. Take a look.

--But how about a picture of what has happened to them since?

--Well, ah, you can look at them in the Herald, They've published a picture of Antunez, their leader, resting happily on a cot. You can see it for yourself here, that is, if the Herald's link still works. Yesterday, they pulled the Spanish version of the story from circulation. No, I don't know why.

--Yes I see. I saw it. But that seems to be the same as one of the frames on the video. How about the New York Times? Aren´t they covering what may be happening in Placetas?

--The New York Times already did in 1897. You can see that here.

--So who is covering it now?

--What do you want? Everyone's at the US Cuba Art Fair or at the Biennial. Look, if you want a video on Antúnez under siege in Placetas we already published one above. It's an 'exclusive' from americatv.com.

--But where does the video show the State Security Forces surrounding them? What about the siege?

--You ask too many stupid questions. I already told you the mainstream media doesn't cover that. They are completely booked covering the Cuban Art Fairs! That's the future, get it? Antes que nada, muy buena pregunta, es una que todos los cubanos y medios de comunicación libres se deberían de estar haciendo respecto a lo que está ocurriendo en Placetas. Sin embargo, al parecer, pocos cubanos y cero periodistas se la hacen.

Mucho hablar. Mucho pensar. Mucho lamentar. Poca acción. Responderé con cierta espontaniedad con los primeros pensamientos que me han visitado en relación a su pregunta.

PRIMERO - Me recordé de cuando llegué al exilio en 1960. No sabía Inglés y por tanto ni tenía amigos. Me estaba 'comiendo un cable' y como cualquier niño quería jugar. Me encantaba ya el beisbol y mi madre sugirío que pusiera un letrero en la calle anunciando que se estaba abriendo todo una liga. Una locura pero a la hora aparecieron más de 20 niños de mi edad locos por jugar beisbol. Realmente no lo esperaba. Jugamos y mucho. A los 6 meses aprendí Inglés de ellos y hasta sin darme cuenta. Hoy, como algunos otros cubanos, también he puesto un letrero:

5 Cubanos Bajo Estado de Sitio en Placetas. ¿Cuanto Tiempo les Quedará de Vida?

Sin embargo, ¿que periódico conocido ha enviado a un periodista a Placetas? Cero. ¿Que esperarán?

Quizás no les creen pero tampoco han demostrado estár interesados en saber si es verdad. No me cabe duda que algunos saben lo que podría estar ocurriendo en Placetas.

El letrero en la calle para jugar beisbol tuvo un éxito incomparablemente mayor que un blog en Google. Claro esos eran niños inocentes.

SEGUNDO: Me recuerdo de una reunión en casa de una señora Cubana muy conocida al principio de los años 90. Estaba llena de intelectuales exiliados. Todos habalaban y yo escuchaba. Por fin la señora me preguntó algo así: "Tu que crees del problema de Cuba?"

Le respondí que creía que había que hablar menos y actuar más, y se insultó. Sin embargo, pronto llegamos a tener una buena amistad y hasta me invitaba a charlar en su cama de muerte. Quisiera pensar que reconoció algo de verdad en lo que le dije.

TERCERO: Obviamente tampoco creo que la repuesta es un blog en Google. Sin embargo, no hiere, y algo es algo, por ahora. Es decir, Usted pudo hacer una buena pregunta y yo le pude responder.

CUARTO: Es necesario organizarnos para actuar y entonces demostrar para exigir, adentro de Cuba y afuera. ¿No es obvio?

Aquí publiqué una simple propuesta la cual en el caso de Antúnez habría que modificar, para acelerar.

While the most well known US and international newspapers continue to ignore the siege of 5 fasting Cubans in Placetas by 'State Security', bloggers continue trying to alert the world to the unfolding events to the extent they are able to objectively confirm them.

Yet bloggers such as me are also facing a daunting challenge and from no less a media powerhouse than the Google search engine. Yes, the Great Google.

Typically Google will post my blogs and a little while later they appear on its search engine if one queries with 1 or 2 of the keywords mentioned on the title of the post. If one then sorts the results of the search by date, they appear immediately and on top of later ones. If one sorts by 'relevance' they will appear at some point depending on how relevant Google's search engine has evaluated them to be.

Such, however, is not the case with my 2 posts (one in English and the other in Spanish) relating to the media blackout on Antúnez and the ongoing siege in Placetas.

They don't appear if one sorts the search either by date (March 26) or relevance. I tried it with the keywords 'Antunez', then 'Antunez Placetas' and finally with the exact titles:

If you wish to confirm this, try searching them in Google or Yahoo and you may see they are just not there, even though others can presumably reach them by going to this blog, but only if they happen to know my blog's address. However, my other posts are available. Other later posts by others appear when these posts should be. What's most curious is that they don't even appear if one searches for the whole title of the post! Ironically, the posts are about a media news blockage.

Possibly there's a logical and justifiable explanation for this selective censorship of my posts and they may even appear soon after I post this. Let us not get paranoid yet, but if the problem continues with these 2 posts , I wonder what else might explain this phenomenon apart from censorship.

Meanwhile the news blackout on Antunez and 5 others under siege in Placetas, Cuba continues and the US or international mainstream media has yet to visit, confirm and report...and I was even hoping for our friend Google's help with this. Still am.

Less than 1 hour after I posted this it can be found on the Google Search engine. However, the other 2 that are cited above still do not appear in Google's search results. This new post is the one that appears in Google search results when one searches for those other 2.

I will proceed to take out the photo of Antúnez published by the Herald which I had inserted in said 2 posts as allowed by copyright 'fair use' provisions. Perhaps that is what has been causing the problem. We'll see.

The post "News Blackout on Antunez and Dissidents Under Siege in Placetas, Cuba Continues" has not been blocked by Google. However, it does not appear in a blog search but rather in a standard Google web search. I guess Antúnez and I should be thankful and suppose this means it's been upgraded (although it should appear in blog searches as well). The Spanish version does not appear anywhere yet.

I wonder who can read it in Cuba.

El bloqueo de noticias sobre lo que está ocurriendo en Placetas ya se ha convertido en parte de este evento. No, no me refiero a Granma o al monopolio de los medios en Cuba por los Castro. Todo el mundo sabe que estos no publicarían nada que pudiese amenazar su apretón totalitario.

Tampoco es un bloqueo completo sino algo quizás mas sutil. Por cierto, hoy El Nuevo Herald publicó una *PIEZA, aunque por debajo de los mas prominentes titulares donde enfocan en lo que Fidel y Mariela Castro tienen que decirnos, lo cual como de esperar y para distraer la atención, es sobre todo menos de los 5 disidentes que tienen sitiados. Nada en el artículo demuestra que el Herald ha visitado Placetas. Sin embargo publicaron una foto de Antúnez felizmente descansando en un catre.

Cero fotos de las fuerzas de Seguridad del Estado rodeando la casa. ¿Es que dichas fuerzas no están allí o que simplemente el Herald no envío un periodista para sacarles fotos? Si es así, por que no lo hizo y por qué no lo explicó en su artículo? ¿Quien podría dudar que el Herald tiene corresponsales en Cuba. Solo hay que darle un vistazo a la galería de fotos que publicaron hoy sobre el "Bienal de Arte en la Habana". ¿Como es que pudieron tomar estas fotos pero ninguna de 'Seguridad del Estado' la cual se presume está rodeando la casa de los disidentes?

Aparentemente por razones aún desconocidas el reportaje del Herald se basa, no sobre una visita al lugar del Estado de Sitio, sino en una conversación de larga distancia con Antúnez. Por lo tanto Antúnez tiene acceso a un teléfono. Hmmm. Le preguntaron si había intentado salir a buscar nutrientes o de llamar a alguien para que se los trajera? Aparantemente no. ¿Por qué no?

¿Que es lo que el Herald está intentando decirnos sobre lo que está ocurriendo en Placetas? ¿Que Antúnez está tomando una siesta en el futuro destino turístico más popular de los Estados Unidos? No, por supuesto que no. La foto está acompañada de palabras, oraciones y hasta de un mensaje.

El Herald sostiene que la casa de de Antunez 'está en una manzana rodeada de policías y agentes de la Seguridad del Estado." ¿Como saben esto si no han visitado el lugar? ¿Es que están aceptando la palabra de Antunez y los disidentes sin investigar, y con eso implicitamente haciendo menos creíble lo que se alega que está ocurriendo? Imposible que El Herald sea tan ingenuo como para no entender que el aparato Cubano negará lo que los disidentes alegen, y según les convenga. ¿Como es posible entonces que aún no hayan intentado obtener evidencia objetiva de lo que podría estar ocurriendo? Fotos del sitiado. Grabaciones de los agentes rodeando la casa. Video de alguien intentando entrar. Uno sabe que el Herald es capaz de todo esto. ¿Es que no están interesados en objetivamente investigar lo que podría estár ocurriendo en Placetas? Si es así, por qué no? ¿Como es que la Feria de Arte en la Habana (gloriosamente proyectando a aquellos responsables por el sitiado de los disidentes) o la propaganda sin valor alguno de Castro y su sobrina recibe mejor atención periodística que el sitiado de estos disidentes? No es el monopolio de los medios en Cuba suficiente prueba de que lo que estos 2 tengan que decir no resiste argumentos en contra?

Tristemente (y quizás pronto hasta trágicamente) la noción de objetividad del Herald en este caso es en el mejor de los casos amateur. Por cierto, en lugar de intentar de objetivamente confirmar o negar si lo que está ocurriendo es un asesinato a cámara lenta de 5 disidentes, el artículo de hoy levanta sospechas sobre Antúnez, informando a los lectores que "...el gobierno cubano reveló que Antúnez había aceptado fondos de una organización de Miami ...vinculado con el terrorismo..." Ahhh, ahora entiendo, Antúnez y los otros 4 son quizás una célula terrorista. Todo este baboseo sobre derechos humanos en Cuba es solo un encubrimiento de terroristas. ¿Se referirán al terrorismo del tipo Al Queda? Por supuesto que no. Solo terrorismo, o mejor aún, el de tipo Cubano exilio. Usted ya sabe, Posada Carriles y esos cientos de miles de otros terroristas. Los mismos que con los EE.UU. han intentado de asesinar a Fidel más de 200 veces (vean la exhibición de arte en la Habana). Lectores, ese disidente no-violento, el que sale tomando una siesta en la foto publicada por el Herald, está quizás realmente planificando volar a todo el aparato cubano de Castro. No confien en él. No crean en él. Ni hay por qué preocuparse, nosotros no investigaremos más.

¿Por qué es que El Herald o algún otro periódista internacional no ha visitado Placetas? Allí están 5 supuestos disidentes, supuestamente en un ayuno de líquidos y supuestamente sin acceso a nutrientes. Fuerzas de Seguridad del Estado supuestamente han intentado sacarlos con gas y supuestamente no dejan que nadie entre o salga. ¿Por que es que ningún periodista internacional ha ido ahí a investigar, tomado fotos, videos y hecho preguntas ahí mismo en la escena del supuesto crimen, tal y como sería el caso si esto estuviese ocurriendo en cualquier otra parte del mundo? Si tienen absolutamente cero alimentos, ¿cuanto tiempo les queda de vida? Es esto lo que el aparato Cubano y los medios internacionales están esperando averiguar?

The news blackout on Placetas has now become a story too. No, of course I'm not referring to Granma and Castro's Cuban media monopololy. Everyone knows they will not publish anything that threatens their totalitarian grip.

Nor is it a full news blackout but something perhaps more subtle. Indeed, The Miami Herald published a piece today, although below the real Cuba headlines where they focus on what Fidel and Mariela Castro have to say today (distracting everyone's attention to something other than the siege of 5 dissidents of course). Nothing in it demonstrates that the Herald visited Placetas. Yet it published a picture of Antúnez resting happily in a cot.

No pictures of State Security forces surrounding his house. Are these forces not really there or did the Herald just not send a journalist to take pictures? If so, why not and why wasn't it explained in the article? Surely the Herald has correspondents in Cuba. Just take a look at the gallery of pictures they have published on the "Bienal de arte en La Habana". How were they able to take those pictures but none of State Security presumed to be surrounding the dissidents' house?

Apparently the Herald's report is for some yet unknown reason based not on a visit to the site of the siege but on a long distance telephone conversation with Antúnez. So, Antúnez has access to a phone. Hmm. Did they ask him if he had attempted to leave the house to get nutrients or to phone someone to bring them? Apparently not. Why not?

What is the Herald trying to tell us is happening in Placetas? Is it that Antunez is taking a nap in America's favorite future tourist destination? No, of course not. The pictures are accompanied by words, sentences, even a message.

The Herald claims that Antúnez house is "...one that visitors can't reach because the Cuban National Police won't allow it." How do they know this if they have not visited the site? Are they just taking Antúnez and a couple of other dissidents' word for it, thus implicitly making the story of what is happening less credible? Surely the Herald must be aware that the Cuban apparatus is going to deny anything the dissidents claim. How could they have failed thus far to attempt to obtain objective evidence of what may in fact be happening? Pictures of the siege. Recordings of the Agents surrounding the house. Videos of someone trying to enter. One knows the Herald is capable of all of this so are are they just not interested in investigating what is objectively happening in Placetas? If so, why not? How could the art fair in Havana (gloriously featuring those responsible for the siege of the dissidents), or Castro's and his niece's worthless dictatorial propaganda be accorded better coverage than this? Isn't their media monopoly sufficient proof that what these 2 may have to say cannot stand up to objections?

Sadly and perhaps soon even tragically, the Herald's notion of objectivity in this case is at best amateurish. Indeed rather than attempt to confirm or deny objectively the slow assasination of 5 dissidents that may be taking place, today's article raises suspicions about Antúnez by telling readers that the "...Cuban 'government' (my quotes) revealed that he had accepted funds from a Miami organization ...with ties to terrorism..." Oh, I get it, Antúnez and the other 4 are perhaps a terrorist cell. All this human rights talk in Cuba is just a cover for terrorism. Do they mean the Al Queda type? Of course not. Just terrorism, or, better yet, the Cuban exile type. You know, Posadas Carriles and those hundreds of thousands of other terrorists. The same crowd who with the US tried to assasinate Fidel over 200 times (see the art show in Havana). Readers, that non-violent dissident, the one taking a nap in the picture published by The Miami Herald is perhaps really planning to blow up Fidel's Cuban Apparatus. Don't you trust him. Don't believe him. Not to worry, we won't investigate any further.

Why hasn't the Herald or any international journalist visited Placetas? There are 5 men supposedly on a liquid fast but supposedly with no access to nutrients. State Security forces supposedly have tried to gas them out and supposedly refuse to let anyone enter or exit. Why hasn't any international journalist gone there, taken pictures, videos and asked some questions right on the scene as would be the case if this were happening anywhere else? If they have absolutely no nutrients, how much time do they have left to live? Is that what the Cuban apparatus and the international media are waiting to find out?

What exactly is going on in Placetas, Cuba?

News on what's happening with the 5 Cubans under siege in Placetas for a week remain scarce. Cubaencuentro.com appears to be the only news outlet reporting on the story. Yet their coverage is apparently based only on conversations with a spokesperson for the 5.

Today they reported that the dissidents were gassed last night while they slept and in order to force them out. In addition State Security poured petroleum on the porch, placed 'obsecene and aggresive signs' on the premises and harrassed them verbally but from outside. Antunez, the leading dissident and black has accused them of racism and reportedly manifested: "They have used the black race as their flag and now don't tolerate that us blacks question the system."

Why are they under siege and prevented from obtaining liquid nutrients to continue their fast? Have they attempted to exit to get nutrients? Has anyone tried to deliver nutrients? Have any international journalists attempted to visit the premises in Placetas? If so, what happened in any of these cases?

Has the International Red Cross sought access? Would 'State Security' be willing to allow them in? What nutrients do the dissidents have in storage, if any? How many more days or hours do they have left without nutrients?

Pocas Noticias sobre Cinco Cubanos en Estado de Sitio

¿Que exactamente está ocurriendo en Placetas, Cuba?

Noticias sobre los 5 cubanos sitiados por Seguridad del Estado en Placetas escasean. Cubaencuentro.com y Miscelaneasdecuba.net parecen ser hoy los únicos servicios periodísticos informándonos sobre los acontecimientos.

Aparentemente lo reportado por Cubaencuentro se basa exclusivamente en sus conversaciones con una representante de los disidentes. Hoy informó que fueron gaseados anoche mientras dormían y para forzarlos a salir. Además reportó que 'Seguridad del Estado' derramó petroleo sobre la entrada a la casa, colocó letreros 'obscenos y agresivos' y los provocó verbalmente aunque desde afuera. Antunez, el líder de los disidentes en ayuno y negro los acusó de racismo y manifestó además: "Han utilizado a los de la raza negra como bandera, y ahora no toleran que nosotros los negros cuestionemos el sistema"

¿Por qué están bajo estado de sitio y se les impide obtener nutrientes líquidos para continuar con su ayuno? ¿Han intentado salir a buscar alimentos líquidos? ¿Ha intentado alguien entregárselos? Han intentado los periodistas internacionales visitar la casa en Placetas? De ser así, que ocurrió en cada uno de estos casos?

¿Ha intentado la Cruz Roja Internacional obtener acceso? Se les concedería acceso por 'Segurudad del Estado'? ¿Que alimentos tienen los disidentes almacenados, si alguno? ¿Cuantos días u horas más les quedan de vida sin acceso a nutrientes?

Solidarity with 5 Fasting Cubans Grows even as Castro Tightens Screws

"There's a sign at the entrance to Antunez home that reads as follows: 'In the US Obama asked for change and became president. In Cuba Oscar Elias Biscet asked for changes and he is behind bars. Both of the men mentioned are black; the American lives in what is an exemplary democracy for the world. The second, Biscet, lives under a ferocious tyranny headed by the tyrannical Castro brothers."

The quote was posted as a comment by someone identifying as "Encasa De Antunez" (#37) in Cubaencuentro.com tonight.

Antunez, a dissident and former political prisoner who recently ended a 30 day hunger strike but immediately continued with a liquids only fast (along with 4 other dissidents) now finds his home (and the sign) surrounded by Cuban 'State Security'. They refuse to allow anyone to enter and deliver liquid foods or medications to the fasting dissidents.

In other words, Cuban 'State Security' is either executing orders to force them back on an absolute hunger strike (assasination) or attempting to force them to stop protesting for their rights.

Expressions of solidarity with Antunez are nevertheless growing although not yet as fast as the unprecedented avalanche of solidarity with Castro's tyranny of the past several weeks.

How will those nations with diplomatic relations with Cuba respond? How will they conduct good relations with the tyranny? Will they intervene on behalf of the dissidents and attempt to provide them with liquid foods despite the tyranny's siege? Will they demand that the siege be ended? Will they condition their diplomatic ties to the respect of human rights in Cuba? Or will they remain silent to avoid disturbing their relationship with the tyrant?

Solidadridad con Cubanos en Ayuno Aumenta y la Tiranía Aprieta

Idania Yanes Contreras la disidenta cubana embarazada que había iniciado una huelga de hambre tras haber sido arrestada (por supuestamente destruir propiedad del 'estado') fue liberada y se marchó con su marido, también un disidente activista.

Evidentemente su única intención había sido expresar solidaridad con Antunez (Jorge Luis García Pérez ) y 4 otros opositores en Placetas (los cuales han sustituído la huelga absoluta de hambre, con una dieta exclusivamente líquida) y no la de hacer daño alguno a la criatura dentro de ella.

Fuerzas de 'Seguridad del Estado' han rodeado la casa de Antunez en Placetas impidiendo que nadie entre o que se les entreguen insumos para continuar la dieta de líquidos, o medicamentos.

O sea, al parecer la tiranía está intentando forzarlos a una huelga absoluta de hambre, es decir, está intentando matarlos o forzarlos a dejar de protestar por sus derechos.

¿Que harán los gobernantes del mundo con relaciones diplomáticas con Cuba? ¿Como conducirán sus buenas relaciones con la tiranía? ¿Intentarán intervenir a favor de los opositores, haciéndoles llegar los insumos líquidos a pesar de que la tiranía lo impide? Condicionarán la relación con ella al respeto de los derechos humanos de los cubanos? ¿O se quedarán callados para no ofender al tirano?

Disidente Cubana Embarazada Inicia Huelga de Hambre

Una disidente cubana embarazada ha sido arrestada por violar propiedad del 'estado' al comenzar una huelga de hambre.

"Este lunes permanecía detenida la activista Idania Yanes Contreras, presidenta de la Coalición Central Opositora, quien se encuentra en su séptima semana de embarazo y ha iniciado una huelga de hambre."

La noticia fue reportada hoy en Cubaencuentro.com aquí.

Ojalá los católicos disidentes en Cuba continuen haciendo todo lo necesario para protestar contra la tiranía, y ahora también por orientar moralmente a la disidencia, pues con estas huelgas de hambre es imposible sostener que se están practicando métodos no-violentos.

Protestar por medio de una huelga de hambre que podría terminar en la muerte no es moralmente aceptable ya que es equivalente al suicidio.

Aún más censurable es cuando el disidente que protesta es una mujer embarazada. En tal caso no solo estaría cometiendo suicidio más rapidamente, sino además, permanente perjudicando o quitándole la vida a un ser inocente e indefenso, del cual es plenamente responsable.

La oposición no-violenta debe de dejar practicar estos métodos violentos e inmorales pues causan un grave mal, son grave ofensa al Dios de la Vida, y debilitan exponencialmente la posición moral que han asumido por tanto tiempo ante las conciencias de nuestros crueles opresores.

¿Como es que se les ha ocurrido violar sus propios derechos y a la vez reclamarlos? ¿Peor aún, como se les ha ocurrido violar los derechos de una criatura indefensa y argumentar a la vez que defienden los derechos de todos?

Según Cubaencuentro la disidente embarazada fue acusada por la tiranía de "daños a la propiedad socialista", especificamente de "romper un ventanal de cristal en el vestíbulo de la sede de la Seguridad del Estado." Ni una palabra aparentemente fue mencionada por la tiranía sobre el posible daño permanente y hasta mortal a la criatura.

Romper una ventana. Esa es la tragedia para ellos. Vaya que gran tragedia.

Obviamente hay más de 2 propuestas de 'liberación' en juego en Cuba, como en el resto del mundo. Yo pensaba que estábamos luchando por los derechos humanos de todos. Sin embargo, en esta triste noticia se ve que no es así. Se ve que no todos están incluídos en ese 'todos'. ¡Ojalá la disidente embarazada y todos los cubanos se den cuenta pronto y antes de que cause(n) un daño irreversible!

Exilio Cubano da Señales de Vida

Por otra parte Jorge Luis Ferrer publicó hoy unas palabras sobre la desidia del exilio cubano y recibió varios comentarios. En uno JoseLuis Sito planteó lo siguiente:

"Los “exiliados”, termino que habría que analizar seriamente, son los encarcelados del exterior. Son millones. Se comprende que en Cuba el terror del régimen los paralice, no se comprende que impide los “exiliados” movilizarse y montar acciones. ¿Los cubanos de España o de Paris viven bajo el terror? ¿Por qué no se hacen manifestaciones en todo el mundo, se organizan debates públicos, se alerta la opinión y los medios de comunicación?"

Sí, el exilio está vivo, pero desorganizado, dedicado a 'reaccionar' a lo que hace Castro en vez de presionarlo a reaccionar.

Además no pocos hasta ponen su esperanza en la misma tiranía o en la muerte natural de esta. Estos se auto-engañan cuando buscan una liberación barata, una que no requiere acción desde la conciencia o sacrificio, una que no es liberación alguna.

Otros erroneamente creen que oposición no-violenta significa no actuar. ¿Como vamos a despertar la conciencia del enemigo y sus aliados sin confrontarlos con ella?

Castro no sería un problema, no estaría en el poder, si nosotros no tuviéramos un problema. Un problema de no actuar según nuestra conciencia, o posiblemente de vivir con una conciencia que no se auto-examina, o con una conciencia engañada, que confunde el bien con el mal.

Los cristianos entre nosotros sabemos que no necesitamos adivinos, castrólogos o especuladores, sino profetas capaces de tramitir la palabra viva, transformadora y liberadora. Necesitamos tramitir la fe a los que no la tienen y actuar según lo que nos exige la conciencia que se nutre de la fe. Un católico no se puede quedar con brazos cruzados ante cualquier injusticia. Dios y la injusticia no mezclan nada bien.

Antier fue Antuñez (y mañana también). Hoy las Damas en Blanco. ¿Y nosotros los exiliados qué? ¿Como los respladamos desde nuestra libertad?

Les recuerdo a continuación lo que propuse hace unos días, pero si han concebido un mejor proyecto, por favor, comuníquenlo. De lo contrario, organizémosnos para exigirle a la tiranía que publique en Granma y Juventud Rebelde la Declaración de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, a la cual suscribe. El proyecto podría proceder así:

PRIMERO: Se enviaría una carta, con copia a Fidel y Raul Castro, a todos los embajadores de todos los países de la ONU que suscriben a la Declaración de Derechos Humanos para pedirles que pidan a la tiranía que esta sea publicada en los medios de comunicación monopolizados por ella, y que además pueda ser distribuida y discutida por todo cubano y por toda Cuba, libremente, sin impedimento alguno. Esta carta idealmente sería firmada electrónicamente en Internet por el mayor número de exiliados posible. Lograr esto tomará un tiempito.

SEGUNDO: Luego de publicar dicha carta en Internet y enviársela a la tiranía, se le daría 30 días para publicarla en los periódicos principales de su monopolio mediático, incluyendo Granma y Juventud Rebelde.

TERCERO: Si la tiranía, como es probable, no publica la Declaración de Derechos Humanos tal y como lo exigimos, luego de consultar con otros líderes opositores en Cuba, el Sr. Antuñez determinaría una fecha (preferiblemente secreta) en la cual los disidentes saldrían a las calles con el objetivo único de repartir la Declaración de Derechos Humanos por toda Cuba.

CUARTO: En diversos puntos del exilio cubano mundial organizaríamos demostraciones para que en esa misma fecha le informemos al mundo lo que hemos pedido a la tiranía y a los gobiernos del mundo, y que se nos ha negado. O sea, en la misma fecha que los disidentes salgan a la calle en Cuba para distribuir la Declaración de la ONU sobre los Derechos Humanos, saldríamos los exiliados a demostrar desde donde nos hayamos organizado en el exilio. La fecha común para ambos solo se divulgaría en el momento más oportuno.

Si en 1976 un peatón meramente demostraba interés en cruzar una calle en San Franciso los automóviles que se le acercaban se detenían inmediatamente. Uno entonces cruzaba la calle o avenida. Nadie lo apuraba. Me quedé maravillado la primera vez que lo experimenté, sentí como un 'renacimiento de la maravilla' (no, no como Ferlinghetti parcial pero criticamente chapuzeó en "Estoy Esperando"). ¡Esto es civilización! Así pensé.

Unos 20 años más tarde ya no era así. El del automovil era el del poder y le advertía al peatón con un mero bocinazo que este estaba cruzando su calle, o que podría tener la intención.

Con comparable arrogancia, insensibilidad e indiferencia hoy Lula le tocó el claxon a millones de cubanos, declarandole al Wall Street Journal: "No hay razón humana, sociológica o política para mantener un embargo a Cuba"

No, Lula, por supuesto que no. Usted es el del auto y no hay por qué detenerse ante los cubanos que andamos a pie.

If in 1976 a pedestrian in San Francisco merely demonstrated interest in crossing a street all approaching cars would immediately halt. One then would cross the street or avenue and no one even rushed you. The first time I experienced this I felt a 'renaissance of wonder' (no, not like Ferlinghetti partially but critically botched up in "I am Waiting"). This is civilization! So I thought.

Some 20 years later this was no longer the case. The one with the car was the one with the power and with a mere honk of the horn made sure you knew you were crossing or intending to cross his or her street.

With comparable arrogance, insensibility and indifference Lula today honked his horn at millions of Cubans, declaring to the Wall Street Journal "There is no human, sociological or political reason to maintain the embargo on Cuba."

No, Lula, of course not. You are the one with the car and there is no reason to halt for Cubans crossing the street.

Antunez cambia de rumbo: "Os tocamos la flauta, y no bailasteis..."

Según reportaron hoy elNuevoHerald.com y Cubaencuentro.com aquí y aquí respectivamente, el disidente cubano Jorge Luis García Pérez, conocido como 'Antunez', cambió de rumbo hoy luego de ser convencido por otros opositores de que era 'más útil vivo'. De esto no cabe la menor duda especialmente cuando uno considera la escaséz de cubanos listos para asumir la responsabilidad que tenemos todos de liberar a Cuba de esta tiranía.

Por su parte Antunez evidentemente está intentando movilizar al movimiento opositor no-violento el cual se encuentra acosado por todas partes dentro de Cuba.

Tristemente, sin embargo, en los periódicos Internet del exilio hubieron varios, demasiados, comentarios de repudio contra Antunez. Fueron publicados tanto en elnuevoherald.com como en cubaencuentro.com, los cuales podríamos suponer lo justifican por defender la libertad de expresión, a pesar de que el tema ha sido el de un opositor en grave peligro ya que hacía 30 días que no comía.

Antunez ha decidido continuar con un ayuno de líquidos mientras se organizan nuevas 'marchas y protestas junto a otros disidentes' según Cubaencuentro.

En este blog no recibí comentario alguno apoyándolo. Ni tampoco recibí muestra de interés alguno sobre la propuesta de coordinar protestas afuera de Cuba con las de los opositores adentro, buscando con eso robustecer nuestro impacto en la conciencia mundial. Pueden aún leer la propuesta de 4 puntos en los últimos párrafos aquí.

La reacción (y falta de) de significantes partes del exilio hasta hoy me ha hecho pensar en el pasaje de Lucas 7:32-33 donde Jesús reprocha a sus compatriotas por criticar tanto a Juan Bautista como a él, y hasta por razones opuestas:

"Os tocamos la flauta, y no bailasteis;
entonamos endechas, y no llorasteis."

En sus ejercicios espirituales San Ignacio sugiere que nos preguntemos: ¿Que hemos hecho por Cristo? ¿Que hacemos? Que vamos a hacer?

Seguramente San Ignacio derivó esta reflexión de las de Jesús con sus discípulos:

"Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos ... en la cárcel, y vinimos a ti?"
"En verdad os digo que en cuanto lo hicisteis a uno de estos hermanos míos, aun a los más pequeños, a mí lo hicisteis." (Mateo 25)

Que no quepa duda: Los exiliados cubanos también estamos bajo el reto de responder a esta pregunta.

Carta y Propuesta a Antunez y a Todo Cubano Opositor de la Tiranía

Estimado Sr. Antunez y todo cubano opositor de la tiranía:

Escribo lleno de admiración por el Sr. Antunez, por su fe en Dios y su compromiso con la lucha no-violenta (por nuestra parte) para lograr el respeto de los derechos humanos de todos los Cubanos. Comparto su fe y su compromiso, razones por la cual he decidido acercarme a él y a todos los cubanos con algunas ideas y una propuesta.

Primero de todo no creo que el Sr. Antunez debe de auto martirizarse. La cruel tiranía no cambiará nada aunque 1 millón de Cubanos lo imitasen. Ellos llevan 50 años atropellándonos y no hay que añadir a eso, sino denunciarlo más efectivamente hasta llegar a ejercer nuestros derechos responsablemente, aunque intenten impedírnoslo.

Segundo, a mi entender, 3 metas unen a todos los Cubanos verdaderamente opuestos a la tiranía:

PRIMERO: La liberación incondicional de todos los presos políticos.

SEGUNDO: El respeto de todos los derechos humanos de todos los cubanos.

TERCERO: La celebración de elecciones legítimas multipartidistas, inclusivas de todo el exilio, y dentro del marco de un gobierno democrático con legítima separación de poderes, como el que Batista violó en 1952, y Castro en 1959.

Creo que la mayoría sabemos que necesitamos lograr la segunda meta para poder lograr la primera y tercera. Con esa victoria habremos ganado bastante más que la mitad de esta guerra. Por eso es que la tiranía intenta impedir que los disidentes en Cuba distribuyan la Declaración de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, a las cuales hipócritamente suscriben. Sencillamente no quieren que los Cubanos conozcan sus derechos porque no quieren o tienen intención de respestarlos. Recomiendo por lo tanto que por el momento el Sr. Antunez limite su protesta a solo este segundo punto. Mis ideas sobre como sería más efectivo protestar en este momento las expreso adelante.

A mi entender, protestar, como el Sr. Antunez ha hecho, por una casa digna para todos los cubanos no es buena idea en este momento por varias razones. Por ejemplo, para comenzar tendríamos que estar todos de acuerdo con lo que queremos decir con 'una casa digna'. Viviendo en la Argentina, yo no tengo nevera y mi coscina es una garafa conectada a un pequeño tanque de gas. No poseo casa, sino que alquilo una habitación pequeña. Excepto por mis libros, cama, y computadora no tengo casi posesiones. Sin embargo antes las tuve y en abundancia. Carecer de ellas voluntariamente no me ha disminuído en nada. Prefiero vivir libre con lo poco que libremente poseo que en cualquiera de las casas robadas por el tirano que se ha apoderado de nuestra patria, hasta ahora, Como creyente (aunque no se si el Sr. Antunez será Cristiano-Católico como yo), creo que por lo menos algunos me entenderán cuando afirmo que el cuerpo de cada uno es el templo del Espíritu Santo, y por tanto su verdadera y más fundamental casa en esta tierra. Es tal cuerpo, y toda intención en el corazón de cada cubano, lo que tiene que ser digno.

Por otro lado, comparto totalmente la solidaridad del Sr. Antunez con los presos políticos. Sin embargo dudo mucho que la tiranía los vaya a liberar incondicionalmente, o dejar de abusar,ya que desde siempre ha estado indispuesta a respetar nuestros derechos más fundamentales, y además los metieron en la carcel por atreverse exigirlos.

Lo más efectivo sería simplemente, y paso a paso, ejercer los derechos que nos niegan y para que eso ocurra todos los Cubanos tienen que primero conocerlos. Por lo tanto la táctica apropriada en este momento es la de educar a todo Cubanos sobre sus derechos aunque irónicamente para lograrla necesitamos ejercerlos sabiendo que intentarán impedírlo.

¿Como mejor educarlos sino distribuyendo por toda Cuba la Declaración de Derechos Humanos Universales a la cual la tiranía hipocritamente suscribe?

Se que ya se varios disidentes han intentado esto anteriormente y que lo siguen intentando. Sin embargo, lo que propongo sería diferente porque lo haríamos en una fecha específica, y si Dios y el exilio quieren, los apoyaríamos con demostraciones simultaneas desde afuera de Cuba. Concretamente la iniciativa tomaría una forma como la siguiente:

Si está de acuerdo que valdría la pena estar vivo para lanzar esta iniciativa, por favor deje su huelga de hambre ya. Las últimas consecuencias no deben ser su muerte sino la libertad de Cuba y el respeto de los derechos por los cuales Usted ha luchado. En este momento, morirse en huelga de hambre es equivalente, por heroico que es, a no hacer todo lo posible por los ideales que lo han iluminado hasta este momento.

Quizás Usted se preguntará, con buena razón, si algún otro Cubano haría caso a lo que aquí se está proponiendo y me pregunto lo mismo. Por lo tanto, apelo a todos los Cubanos que tienen acceso a Internet a distribuir esta propuesta y a señalar su disposición a respaldarla por medio de un sencillo comentario en este blog para que Antunez mismo lo compreuebe. Los publicaré diariamente. Aquell(os/as) que además estén dispuestos a ayudar el esfuerzo organizador, por favor indíquenlo. Espero que el compatriota Antunez pueda ver los muchos cubanos que desean que viva, que comparten sus ideales, y que están dispuestos a respaldarlos en un acto concreto y efectivo de solidaridad.

Que quede claro, apoyar la propuesta desde el exilio significa lo siguiente:

Firmar la carta que se publñicará electrónicamente y comprometerse por medio de un comentario aquí a participar en una demostración donde estén viviendo o viajar a donde haya una en el lugar y momento que posteriormente se indicará, y en que simultaneamente se divulgará la Declaración de Derechos Humanos por toda Cuba, o, de lo contrario proponer en este blog una tactica mejor y para la cual puedan demostrar que hay más apoyo. No es necesario ser Cubano para unirse al pueblo cubano a favor de los derechos humanos.

Apoyar la propuesta desde Cuba significa lo siguiente:

Comprometerse a divulgar la Declaración de Derechos Humanos en el lugar y momento que se lo indique el Sr. Antunez o su representante debidamente autorizado, o , de lo contrario proponer aquí una táctica mejor y para la cual pueda demostrar que hay más apoyo.

Quedo por tanto, en primera instancia, en espera de la repuesta en este blog de los Cubanos exiliados. Me es imposible creer que el exilio dejará morir al Sr. Antunez sin hacer todo lo posible por los ideales que compartimos con él. Con esta propuesta los llamo a manifestarse ante Dios y su propia conciencia con su digna repuesta.

Una vez el Sr. Antunez pueda ver las repuestas de los exiliados en este blog, quedo en espera de su propia repuesta afirmativa a esta iniciativa (ddeeee1@gmail.com) y de que ha dado por terminada, exitosamente, su huelga de hambre para dedicarse a esta alternativa.

Castro cleans inner circle - yet again

Fidel Castro reveals himself once again as a creature of habit and specifically of those which have allowed him to crush all internal opposition. We saw it when he imprisoned fellow revolutionaries such as Huber Matos and Mario Chanes in 1959, for 20 and 30 years respectively. We saw it when he appointed Manuel Urrutia as President (violating the Constitution he professed to have fought to reinstate as well as the promise of elections) and then forced his resignation. We saw it when he fired his foreign Minister Roberto Robaina, his protegé. We saw it when he tried and executed General Ochoa, the Commander of Cuban Armed Forces in Angola. There are almost countless examples. We saw it very recently when his personal secretary was demoted to librarian.

Today we see it with Carlos Lage, Vice President of the Council of State and Felipe Perez Roque, the regime's Foreign Minister.

In his reflection on the matter, Fidel first distanced himself from them, as he habitually does, clarifying that he never chose them personally. Lage's is an 'elected' office. Then, without mentioning their names, he accuses them (who else?) of having committed 'indignities' and of daring to have the ambition to taste the 'honey of power' without suffering the sacrifices, presumably as Castro has. He further accuses them of making promises to 'external enemies'. Who could he be referring to if not the United States? Who are they accused of making their promises to? We know Richard Lugar recently sent emissaries to Cuba. Could it be to them? What does Congressman Lugar have to say?

As should be expected, the second and third paragraphs of their letters of resignation are almost identical. They confess their absolute guilt and the justice of the accusations while promising to remain 'faithful to Fidel, the Party ..." and to Raul Castro, the addressee.

Yet there are still many who spuriously argue that things in Cuba have changed, that the embargo should be lifted and that business will be good with the Castros, even if Cubans remain under his gun.

What could the deposed ministers have promised the external enemy that Castro just can't afford? If Congressman Lugar knows, isn't he morally obligated to disclose it? If he knows and he doesn't disclose it, what weight should be given to his argument that the embargo just doesn't work?

S. 428: The Cuba Travel Act - Part II - Response to a new objection

RESPONSE TO ANOTHER OBJECTION TO THE EMBARGO (begun below in my post "S. 428: The Cuba Travel Act" on February 27)

Fifth objection and response (objection submitted as a comment on March 1 by Al Godar of 'Blogs Sobre Cuba' ) is that the embargo must be lifted because in his experience

"...a great portion of the Cuban people believes that the United States hates us and want to harm us..."

To respond to this objection some facts first need to be clarified.

Given the history of US-Cuba relations since 1898 Castro and others have constantly hammered on valid arguments against the United States. The U.S. intervened in Cuba 1898, without invitation, in its war for Independence, occupied the nation with 50 thousand troops and 'settled' with the Spaniards while forcing Cuba's legitimate leaders to the margins. Under threat of continued occupation the US then imposed the Platt Amendment on Cuba's first constitution thereby awarding itself, uninvited, the right to intervene in Cuba's internal affairs. Furthermore, Cuban history is packed with derogatory statements by US Congressmen and Presidents about the Cuban people (see "Cuba between Empires" by Louis Perez). As if that were insufficient, the US flag was propped up on the island after the war of Independence and Cubans were forced to lease Guantanamo to the US undert threat of continued occupation.

There is no doubt that all of this and much more is part of every Cuban's education under Castro, and, regrettably, rightfully so. Yet that is only the first part of the story.

In 1936 the Platt Ammendment was revoked and by 1940 Cubans approved a new Constitution, without the Platt Ammendment and as a sovereign and fully democratic republic. The US did not intervene.

There were elections in 1940, 1944 and 1948. Three months before the 1952 elections former president Batista was significantly behind in the polls and executed a military overthrow of Cuba's democratic government. The U.S. under president Truman recognized Batista's coup government as legitimate in just 15 days. So again the US gave Cubans reason to believe the U.S. was a hostile nation. This is the second part of the story and Castro tells it well.

The third part begins with Cuba's civil society (urban organizations and student leaders) and Castro's 26th of July movement uniting forces to evict Batista and restore the constitution. On January 1, 1959 they succeeded and Cubans were euphoric but also expected elections and Castro promised as much. Yet on January 3 he started appointing presidents, first Manuel Urrutia and subsequently Osvaldo Dorticós. No elections. On February 1959 he even recognized the 1940 constitution but then proceeded to step all over it, ruling by decree, authorized, according to him, by 'the revolution'. Thusly he began the process of installing a totalitarian state with informers on every block, opponents (including various revolutionaries) imprisoned or executed after summary trials; and first tens, than hundreds of thousands of Cubans fleeing the country with the revolution betrayed by one of its leaders.

With close to 20% of the population in exile, 16 years later Castro pushed through a 'new constitution' (1976) that was according to him, almost unanimously approved. He midified it in 1992 and again in 2002. To make a long story short, Castro's regime, now supposedly run by his brother, remains in power 50 years later. He allows Cubans no means of directly electing a president or reestablishing a multi-party democracy such as the one Batista overthrew. This is the third part of the story and it will cost you dearly if you try to publish it in Cuba, as dissidents will attest.

Therefore, to answer the objection, the correct response cannot possibly be to finance Castro by lifting the embargo. Such a strategic move would most definitely work against the best interests of the Cuban people and of the relationship which the US should strive to establish with them. Lifting the embargo would be an alliance with the tyranny just as it occurred in 1952 with Batista, not an alliance with the Cuban people, as it should be.

The first part of the correct answer is to educate Cubans inside and out about the full history of Cuba, not just the parts that Castro uses to justify perpetuating his regime's tyranny.

The second part of the correct answer is for the United States to recognize its past violations and to inform Cubans (1) that they will never happen again and that (2) the embargo is there to help evict the tyranny and nothing else.

El blogero Al Godar de 'Blogs Sobre Cuba' ha sometido la objeción, mediante un comentario el 1 de marzo, de que el embargo hay que levantarlo porque

"Una gran parte de la población cubana piensa que los americanos nos odian y quieren jodernos."

Nos explica que la tiranía ha convencido a muchos de que es así, intentando con eso auto justificarse.

Luego de hacer un breve resumen de las graves faltas cometidas por los EE.UU. con Cuba entre 1898-1939 y nuevamente en 1952, respondo (en Inglés) que levantar el embargo gravemente heriría los intereses del Pueblo Cubano y también el tipo de relación que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos debería de intentar establecer con este, pues sería una alianza con la tiranía como ocurrió en 1952 con Batista, en vez de una alianza con el pueblo, como debería de ser.

La repuesta correcta al odio a los EE.UU. que Castro ha cultivado para auto justificarse, debe de ser en primera instancia la educación. Es decir, hay que educar al pueblo cubano sobre como la educación que Castro les provee distorciona la parte de la historia que comenzó el 3 de enero de 1959, fecha en la cual comenzó a designar presidentes en vez de reestablecer la constitución, y convocar elecciones, la verdarera razón por la cual se derramó sangre cubana en la revolución.

La segunda parte de la repuesta correcta es que los Estados Unidos debería de publicamente reconocer sus errores entre 1898-1940 y en 1952, explicándole al Pueblo Cubano que (1) jamás volverán a ocurrir y (2) que el embargo es una alianza con ellos y no con la tiranía, y cuyo único propósito es el de ayudarlos a erradicarla.

-Well, it's hard to say. The Council of Hemispheric Affairs says the embargo costs the US 3.5 billion, but I've seen figures as low as $1 billion.

S. 428: The Cuba Travel Act

Noam Chomsky has argued that language is a biological faculty; indeed, a human organ. A human being cannot be deprived of linguistic expression and continue to function normally. One could argue similarly about movement although in this case it's intrinsic to all living organisms. Deprive an individual of freedom of movement or of linguistic expression for an extended period and s/he will most likely be damaged. This is precisely what Cubans have been subjected to for a half century. This, citizens of the United States, is a type of genocide.

The US Congress surely knows that Cubans who dare express opposition to the imposed political order are threatened, beaten up, imprisoned, have their family and children threatened and publicly chastised, their homes sometimes surrounded by pro-regime mobs and their jobs taken away in a land where the tyranny is the only one legal employer. Surely some have heard, for example, of how dissident poet Maria Elena Cruz Varela was forced to swallow her poems http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3692/is_199507/ai_n8713749. Some are surely following daily reporting on these events by dissidents. If not they should consider visiting sites such as http://www.miscelaneasdecuba.net/(Spanish - channeled through a Cuban in Sweden. Surely it's no secret that Cubans are even prohibited from traveling between the island's provinces without the regime's permission and that dissidents who attempt to do so are picked up by state security and frequently beaten up. Is there anyone that does not know that Cubans are not allowed to leave and reenter their own country or that tens of thousands are estimated to have died braving Caribbean waters populated by sharks? Certainly all Congresspersons know that those those Cubans who make it to just feet from US shores are sent back by the US government; just a notch better than what other governments such as the Mexican do, that is, send them back even if they make it to shore. This, Citizens, Representatives and Senators of the United States is appalling, outrageous, barbaric.

Imagine if any US citizen were subjected to this.

US Congresspersons also surely know that Cubans in exile are not necessarily allowed back into their native land. Some are and some are not depending on what best serves the tyranny's interests. For example, many doctors in exile who have been educated in Cuba are punished by not being allowed back to visit their families, even their children. Yet this is their homeland! Two highly successful boxers who escaped while in Brazil were sent back only to be informed upon arrival that their boxing careers were over. One escaped again over a month ago and the other in the past few days, accompanied by 4 others. Both left their families behind. What will happen if they try to return? Will they be allowed in and out again? In order for this tragic situation to change the regime must radically change which is rather unlikely given that, as we all know, they contend to be fully justified. Therefore the regime must go and anything that prolongs its existence deeply wounds the Cuban people, inside and in exile, and is to be rejected and condemned, not supported and financed.

Yet there are US citizens who erroneously believe that their right to travel anywhere. including Cuba, is somehow absolute. Could a US citizen legally enter without permission another's private property or a concentration camp as a tourist? Obviously not.

Of course, the illegitimate regime that severely restricts Cubans' language and movement welcomes US citizens' dollars and the US Congress' interest in reconciliation. Why wouldn't they? Cuba reportedly has 47 thousand hotel rooms and the typical Cuba traveler will easily spend $1000+ in hotels alone on a 10 day trip. Add food, entertainment, transportation and the total could add up to $2000+. If 2-4 million US citizens were to be permitted to travel to Cuba, the tyranny would be rewarded with revenues of $2 to $8 billion. Add billions more from investments and the tyranny will have consolidated itself with US, Venezuelan, Spaniard, Canadian, Russian, Chinese and massive support from Latin America (where democracy is still only a camouflage). Even the French now report interest in the new Cuba slave deal.

Would billions in revenues mean freedom of expression and movement for Cubans? Legitimate elections? Of course not. Let there be no doubt: What the US' actual values are is also being defined with the Cuba Reconciliation Act and The Freedom to Travel Act. Cuba was a free democratic republic from 1940 up until Batista with an ally's help ended it on March 10, 1952.

SOME POSSIBLE OBJECTIONS

First objection and response

Some US citizens may object that governments of other countries don't prohibit their citizens from traveling to Cuba. Indeed they benefit from it through air fares, Cuba investments, etc. These other countries of course are no different than those that benefited from the slave trade.

Second objection and response

A further objection is that flooding Cuba with hundreds of thousands of US tourists will magically bring about cultural and political change. Are those tourists going to publicly demand from the tyranny that it respect all Cubans' freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to associate for political purposes, freedom to leave and reenter their country, without exceptions? If so, why haven't they done so already? Why don't they do so now? The 2 million tourists who have visited Cuba from other countries have done nothing except enrich and empower the tyranny at the expense of Cubans' most elemental rights and dignity. They have changed absolutely nothing for the better. Quite the contrary: the tyranny acts as if vindicated and legitimized by them and promotes it as such.

Third objection and response

Yet another objection is that US citizens are not prohibited from traveling to China. What would US citizens think if the US government were to behave like Cuba's totalitarian tyranny and others, including Cubans, were to finance and defend it with tourists, investments, etc. masked as 'reconciliation' and 'freedom'? Does anyone doubt US citizens would not tolerate it? Why then does any US Citizen expect permission to vacation in China while its leaders step on the rights of Tibetans and other dissidents? Of course they should not be allowed and certainly no less is applicable to Cuba.

Fourth objection and response

Still another objection is that the embargo has not worked in Cuba's case. The US embargo by itself is not sufficient; that much is clear. Other nations should also be part of it to help the tyranny collapse. Given that they are not, that they prefer to benefit from the violation of Cubans' rights, the struggle is exceedingly difficult and Cubans need all the friends they can get, just like the US needed the French in its war of independence from Britain. Political organization is required yet Cuba's exile community is infiltrated by the tyranny's defenders in exile. One just has to visit Cuban Internet forums to see how difficult it is to figure out who is who. The tyranny and its friends thrive by seeding mistrust between Cubans. Those who oppose the tyranny can only recognize each other when they demand (1) the immediate release of all political prisoners, (2) the full respect of all Cubans' human rights and (3) legitimate multi-party elections. The same applies to how Cubans see the US and other countries. Anything that could slow down or impede achieving these objectives means more support for the tyranny by financing it, as these bills before you will do.

H.R. 188: The Cuba Reconciliation Act - Reconciling with Fidel

As one who with over 2 million others has lived in exile much of my life (in my case since since childhood) it's quite difficult not to be swept away by indignation at the so called Cuba Reconciliation Act (H.R. 188). Reconciliation? What exactly changed? Who is sorry and for what are they making amends? Who has apologized or is about to? Castro? The United States? Exiles?

Well, no, critics might respond, just because it's called the Cuba Reconciliation Act doesn't mean anyone is reconciling. Indeed, reconciliation here seems to mean sex without love and with condoms. In any case, if anything goes wrong, abortion is legal both in Cuba and in the US. First however, let's have some sex and in any case in the senate we haven't called it reconciliation (S. 428).

As readers perhaps guessed by the last paragraph, I am a Christian, a Catholic. In my faith we are expected to examine our conscience, to strive to discern right from wrong, to seek forgiveness for wrongs and to forgive those who offend us. Yet, what if those who offend us are not sorry? What if they don't even think they are wrong? What if they don't share your faith or its values and therefore don't agree on what's right and wrong? In a democracy that is imperfectly and temporarily settled with an election or a referendum but what about in the context of US-Cuba relations? On the US end there is a legitimately elected government that decides but on the Cuban end there isn't. What then? Should the US seek reconciliation with an illegitimate representative of the Cuban people? Just what would be just with regard to Cuba?

My critics might stop me right here arguing that such is the wrong question. What matters in their view is not what is just but what is pragmatic, whatever serves the practical interests of US Citizens and presumably (one would think if one was just) Cubans' too. Yet critics might shoot back once again that it's not about being just but about being pragmatic, and in the U.S. that means, being pragmatic about U.S. interests, not necessarily about Cubans'.

Some in the US want to export rice, drill for oil, open hotels like the Spaniards, exercise their 'right' to travel anywhere, etc. They want to preach democracy, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness while financing the opposite in Cuba and remaining credible. Who cares if that means winning others by lying and misinformation, or else demonizing them, while projecting a benevolent and messianic face to the world? Castro has perhaps learned more from this strategy than from any of the Marxist literature from which he ever attempted to draw justification; and like mirror images both are now pragmatically seeking reconciliation.

Their practical interests have converged so to hell with Cubans who in any case can be manipulated so easily. Buy them off with family visits, indemnify some properties and to hell with them. Live and let live. Democracy for the US and a totalitarian tyranny in Cuba: friends at last, like with China and Vietnam, like with Batista.

Thusly they protest and with straight indignant faces. The rights of Castro, family and successors and those of US citizens to travel and make money trump every other consideration. Besides, by opening up to Castro as Cuba, they also argue, the US will be better able to influence him and Cubans. That's how we did it with Batista. What more could the Cuban people want from us anyhow?

Over the next few posts I'll examine these and other arguments for lifting the embargo and reconciling with Fidel.

Cuba Embargo -- Will decency triumph between the United States and the people of Cuba on this occasion?

Democrats are considering legislation that would allow Cubans in the U.S. to visit their families once per year for an unlimited time and to spend $175 per day. This would revoke the unjust law passed during the Bush administration preventing Cubans from exercising this right from within US territory.

Others such as senator Richard Lugar (R) and representative Jeff Flake (R) are going much further, promoting legislation that would allow all US citizens to visit Cuba, extend credit to the Castro tyranny and thereby effectively take the teeth out of the embargo. They argue that this will (somehow) remove the Castro tyranny's pretext for violating human rights. History however contradicts them for what they are arguing for is precisely what Truman and Eisenhower did with Batista's tyranny, helping bring Cuba to where it is now.

The US government will have to decide as it did in 1952 whether its best interests are served by an alliance with a tyranny in Cuba, financing it with tourists, credit and profitable business ventures, or with the Cuban people. Hopefully these 58 years (1952-1959 and 1959-2009) will have served a good purpose and on this occasion, decency will triumph.

¿Triunfará la decencia entre EE.UU. y el pueblo cubano eesta ocasión?

Los demócratas preparan el camino para que Obama pueda cumplir sus promesas a la comunidad Cubana de los EE.UU. Vale la pena recordar que la promesa no fue levantar el embargo, sino permitir que Cubanos en los EE.UU. puedan visitar a sus familares y enviarles remesas.

Los cubanos por supuesto tienen ese derecho, y no tienen que pedirle permiso a Obama para entrar o visitar su patria. Sin embargo para hacerlo desde los EE.UU. tienen que hacerlo dentra de la ley de ese país, y esa es la ley que los demócratas justamente buscan cambiar.

Hay algunos como el Senador Lugar o el representante Flake que quieren ir más allá hasta el extremo de levantar el embargo, permitir que 2-4 millones de turistas estadounidenses visiten a Cuba y extenderle crédito a la tiranía. Estos plantean que esto serviría mejor los intereses de los Estados Unidos. Argumentan que quitando el embargo le quitarían a la tiranía el pretexto preferido que usan para justificar la violación de los derechos humanos de los cubanos, y además que los EE.UU. podría exportar más a Cuba, etc. En los foros cubanos como el de Cubaencuentro se leen voces apoyando estos razonamientos, y más. Algunos hasta intentan persuadir a la oposición Cubana con la fantasía de que millones de turistas estadounidenses en Cuba causarán un cambio cultural y político.

Sin embargo, la historia los contradice. Solo hay que recordar que cuando Batista dio su golpe de estado en 1952 todos estas condiciones se satisfacían. Turistas estadounidenses visitaban sin límites, los EE.UU. exportaba e importaba de Cuba y habían relaciones amistosas. Incluso, el Presidente Truman reconoció al golpista Batista de Cuba como el gobernante legítimo de Cuba en solo 15 días. Le extendió crédito y le vendió armas. Batista torturaba y mataba y en Cuba se celebraban carnavales. Mientras tanto al presidente Prío lo arrestaron en Miami por intentar levantar fondos para liberar a Cuba. El presidente Eisenhower continuó la política de Truman hasta que finalmente tuvo que abandonarla. Sin embargo, esta es la política que Lugar y Flake nuevamente intentan promover. No demuestran el más mínimo remordimiento por el hecho de que el gobierno de los EE.UU. hizo esencialmente lo mismo con Batista.

En el 2009 como en el 1952 los Estados Unidos tendrán que decidir si sus mejores intereses se encuentran aliándose con la tiranía, financiándola con turistas, crédito y buenos negocios, o con el pueblo de Cuba. Esperamos que estos 58 años (1952 a 1959 y 1959 a 2009) hayan servido para algo, y que en esta ocasión la decencia gane.

Para ganarle a Chavez/Castro ... Hay que Ganar el Corazón de los Pobres

Los Castro deben de estar ecstáticos y no es para menos, púes que habrá querido decir FC con eso de que el 'futuro de Cuba' dependía de este referendo, y con que 'Cuba y Venezuela son inseparables?

La repuesta es obvia: Chavez subsidia la tiranía de Castro con 100 mil barriles de petroleo diarios. A $40 el barril esto equivale a unos $14 billones anuales...y a $160 por barril, 4 veces esa cantidad. ¿Cuanto paga Cuba por dicho subsidio? Ni los venezolanos saben cuanto, o exactamente con qué, más allá de los asesores (hmmm que conveniente), maestros y médicos que Castro les envía, y que en Cuba ganan menos de $2 al día.

Sí, Chavez podrá continuar subsidiando a Castro y familia, y por eso este último está feliz. Mientras haya petroleo en Venezuela, y parece que hay más que en cualquier parte del mundo, y mientras no existan fuentes alternas viables, lo intentarán usar para financiar cuanta dictadura les convenga a los apoderados de este bien.

Es interesante sin embargo que Chavez solo ganó con el 54% de los votos mientras que Castro nos asegura que en Cuba el gana con el 97-99%, a pesar de decenas de miles que han muerto intentando escapar, y más de 2 millones de exiliados en 50 años. ¿Que ser razonable podría creer en los números de la tiranía? ¿Por qué Castro no se somete a un referendo como el de Chavez?

Por otro lado, parece que el voto en Venezuela fue honesto por lo cual hay que preguntarse como es posible que haya sucedido. La repuesta creo que es que Chavez les ha prometido ayuda a los pobres, y contrario a Castro, tiene por unos buenos años el petroleo con el cual cumplir su promesa.

¿Que le hemos ofrecido a los pobres los que nos oponemos a Chavez y Castro? ¿Democracia multipartidista? ¿Libertad política? ¿Mercado libre? Parece que en 'el mercado' de los pobres en Venezuela estos ofrecimientos son percibidos como de menos valor que el subsidio económico que les ofrece Chavez.

En el exilio cubano no pocos de los que se oponen parecen estar pensando en ofrecer un equivalente subsidio, pero estadounidense (como en Puerto Rico), para respaldar la independencia y libertad política de la alternativa democrática. Sin embargo, dada la recesión mundial, este subsidio está en peligro. Además, ¿no es esto otro subsidio más, como lo que ofrece Chavez? Por su parte, al convocar referendos, permitir otros partidos, etc. Chavez ha ofrecido un valor que tipicamente viene desde la democracia. O sea, ofrece un subsidio ++, un subsidio más parte de lo que ofrecen sus opositores.

Si los cubanos y los latinoamericanos que deseamos la libertad política y el respeto de los derechos humanos vamos a derrotar a Chavez/Castro, necesitamos poder ofrecer algo mejor a las clases pobre (la mayoría...) y media de lo que ofrece Chavez; y asegurarnos de que los pobres perciban este compromiso y esta solidaridad, en sus vidas concretas.

Mejor aún si pudiesen percibir que lo que les ofrecemos les facilitará pasar del subsidio a cierta independencia económica del gobierno, a más control económico y político sobre sus vidas.

Aún más importante es que perciban que los tratamos como iguales, pues en este mundo 'ser pobre' es no ser respetado, es como 'no ser'. Esto creo que es lo que está en juego en los ojos y corazones de los más pobres en Cuba y latinoamericana y también en la pequeña clase media (fuera de Cuba).

Para ganar la guerra por los derechos humanos y la libertad tenemos que ganarnos primero a los pobres. Ganarlos de verdad, con subsidios y con mucho más que subsidios.

Castro announced prior to the referendum in Venezuela that Cuba's future depended on its results and that both countries' futures were inextricably tied. The truth is that the continuation of $14 billion in annual oil subsidies will most certainly benefit Castro and family. Cubans however will continue to be paid an average of less than $2 per day by 'the state' while the civil liberties they need to exercise in order to oppose it are crushed.

The post further questions why 54% of Venezuelans voted to give Chavez the constitutional right to be reelected an indefinite number of times. I argue that what Chavez and Castro's opponents offer (multiparty democracy, respect for human rights and civil liberties, a market economy) are not as marketeable to Venezuelan's poor as are the subsidies promised by Chavez. The post concludes that to defeat Castro/Chavez opponents must win the heart of Venezuelan's poor with initiatives that materially and concretely affect their lives and more, that is, with respect and true solidarity.

¿Por qué un blog...desde donde estoy en el exilio?

Hace unos años comencé a comentar bajo el pseudónimo "Desde donde estoy en el exilio" en www.Cubaencuewntro.com. Mi simple objetivo era añadir una voz a las que cada vez claman más por el respeto de los derechos humanos en Cuba y a mantener viva la verdad histórica.

El 13 de febrero 2009, luego de haberme expresado por medio del pseudónimo 'Desde donde estoy en el exilio', y por varios años, alguien intentó apropriarse de mi pseudónimo en Cubaencuentro.com. No solo eso, sino que aparentaba ser un oponente de la tiranía en Cuba, como yo.

Lamentablemente cuando intentó publicar bajo mi pseudónimo Cubaencuentro le publicó su comentario. Aunque immediatamente alerté a Cubaencuentro del impostor, el día siguiente este(a) sometió otro comentario, y Cubaencuentro nuevamente se lo publicó, otra vez bajo mi pseudónimo.

Nuevamente alerté a Cubaencuentro y los editores amablemente publicaron mi notificación aquí (comentario número 18): http://www.cubaencuentro.com/es/cuba/noticias/fidel-castro-a-que-se-debe-tanto-alboroto-oligarquico-155991 .

Desde entonces Cubaencuentro no ha publicado nada más del impostor, y espero que con este blog, le sea a este aún más difícil apropriarse de mi identidad y con eso lograr suprimir mi derecho a la libre expresión. De aquí en adelante, si Cubaencuentro permite, dejaré la dirección de este blog en los comentarios que publique en su sitio para asegurar su autenticidad.

Dada la calculada, sistemática represión del derecho a la libre expresión en Cuba, creo que lo sucedido en este paréntesis puede no parecer tener significado, importancia e implicaciones para algunos. Sin embargo, tengo la certeza que los millones de cubanos que llevan medio siglo sin poder expresarse libremente y que conocen la represión desde adentro y afuera, sabrán entender lo que ha ocurrido aquí.
